To all our Faithful Readers,

The Awards Circuit, in all its infinite glory has been a fantastic site in the making since May 2008.  Obviously before that, we were The Oscar Igloo but we know all that history.  In the past few years, we’ve struggled between the two corners of HTML and WordPress.  HTML, the way the site was before this re-launch, has been our identity for many years now.  Up until this change, we were pretty much the last remaining HTML Oscar Predictions site on the web.  Being HTML however, brings some baggage.  It takes far too long to update the site, leaving little time for the things that the readers really LOVE, which is of course, the predictions, Academy Idol, ACCA, etc..  These things have been taking a backseat to the HTML updating for months and months now.

Greetings, and welcome to the new Awards Circuit!  For those of you who are new to our site, every week I preview the new releases for the weekend, going over its synopsis, overall critical reception and speculate on its box office and awards prospects.  What better time for a facelift than the start of the fall (read: Oscar) season?

Our first wide(-ish) release has been in theaters since Wednesday: John Madden’s espionage thriller The Debt.  Helen Mirren, Ciarán Hinds and Tom Wilkinson star as retired Mossad secret agents whose actions capturing a Nazi fugitive in 1966 have made them heroes.  When shocking news about one of them surfaces, their actions are called into question.  The film jumps back and forth in time (where their younger selves are played by, respectively, Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington and Marton Csokas) between the mission and its reevaluation.  Critics say that while the film loses its way and doesn’t quite live up to its promising story, The Debt is overall a successful, taut experience.  Unfortunately, it picked a terrible date to hit theaters.  I have a hard time believing that mainstream moviegoers will want to see a bleak historical drama about Nazis and revenge on Labor Day weekend, plus the online buzz has been hardly earth-shattering, which will probably give it less than $10 million at the end of the weekend.  Lack of buzz will most likely kill its Oscar prospects as well.
