Apologies for the delay in this article going up on the site, but as you can see…we’ve been busy. Still, the DVD column waits for no one, and this is no exception. This week, it’s a small week in terms of quantity but it’s a very good week in terms of quality. All three flicks in release are ones I recommend, each receiving three stars from me during the first half of the year. They may not be terrific films, but they’re pretty good ones for sure. For my PICK OF THE WEEK, I chose to go with the best acted of the bunch. This trio all has its charms, but this one was the most charming in the lot. It’s:
Everything Must Go
Will Ferrell gives what I believe to be his third best performance in this dark dramedy that packs a bigger punch than one might suspect going in. Ferrell is excellent, and while the writing and the directing are merely ordinary, his performance elevates things in a big way. You really feel for his character, a man who loses his job, his home, and his wife all on the same day, forcing him to set up a drunken camp on his (former) lawn and sell his worldly possessions. It’s not that surprising a story, but it’s told well enough to work. It didn’t exactly make a dent at the box office, so now that it’s out on DVD/Blu-Ray, it’s a good opportunity to check out one of the best acting jobs of 2011 so far!
