Hakuna Matata indeed…"The Lion King" is #1 (Disney/Buena Vista)

After actual counts were reported, “The Lion King 3D”outperformed estimates and eclipsed $30.2 million over the weekend, besting even the most ambitious of predictions and delivering the 4th largest September opening of all time.  With 4 wide-scale releases opening this past weekend, “The Lion King 3D” achieved its feat despite being booked at the fewest number of locations of those four films.  Overall, box office ticket sales ramped up 32.9% amongst the Top 12 films, while only one film within the 40 Most Attended movies of the weekend, not counting those films moved to the second-run discount houses, saw an increase in ticket sales from the previous week.

This week, one of the funniest movies of the year (as well as just plain old being one of the top 10 movies of the year) hits shelves for purchase, along with…well, not a whole lot else.  Honestly, it’s pretty much all about my top choice today (it also happens to be one of my favorite flicks of the year so far as previously mentioned, so it’s hardly a bad week or anything), though I’m sure someone somewhere has other things in mind for themselves.  For me, it begins and ends more or less with my PICK OF THE WEEK, which was a slam dunk selection.  I found it to be an hilarious and supremely enjoyable comedy.  It’s:

Bridesmaids

The latest home run from the Judd Apatow stable of comedy features, this is the first female-centric outing, and lo and behold, it turns out to be a top 5 entry into his group (I still prefer the 3 he directed, but aside from that, it stands right up there with the upper echelon Apatow produced works like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Superbad…and who knows, more viewings may boost it even higher) of blockbuster comedies.  Co-writer/star Kristen Wiig turned in nomination caliber work on both sides of the camera in this story of a woman hitting rock bottom while her best friend gets married.  Wiig is excellent, and the supporting cast is great too, including Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd, and Melissa McCarthy (who gives a performance I wish the Academy would recognize with a Best Supporting Actress nod).  It’s a supremely entertaining picture, and I can’t recommend it enough.  Now that it’s out on DVD, go and pick it up and enjoy!

Closing the book on the sights, sounds, films and memories from TIFF 2011…

As it seems to do every year, TIFF ended with a whimper and not a bang.  The first week is teeming with activity, be it the top screenings, interviews, events, and then by the following Thursday, just one week in, it all starts to fade fast. I spent some time watching the short films on the last couple of days because there was precious little else to see that interested me.  Yes I finally saw A Dangerous Method and liked it…did not love it, but will write more about it when it is released.
