I don’t want to overtly go and call ‘Take Shelter’ a disappointment, because it’s not exactly that…I just didn’t fully get what I wanted out of it, leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth that keeps my praise of the work in check.  There are definitely things to like here, notably Michael Shannon’s excellent performance and Jessica Chastain’s terrific supporting turn, as well as many hints that writer/director Jeff Nichols has a bright future ahead, but I had major issues with the pacing and structure that the film chose to employ.  It somewhat shoots itself in the foot in this regard.  I like a slow burn as much as this next guy, but this story of a man possibly losing his mind and/or protecting his family from doom was just too slow, plain and simple.  The film starts out with a lot of potential, but overstays its welcome by a good 20 minutes or so.  A tighter grasp on the material could have led to me singing its praises like almost every other critic out there, but frankly, my thumb is down, albeit slightly.  I definitely recognize what works in the flick, but I can’t overlook what doesn’t, and too much doesn’t work for me to get in line and speak of it as a cinematic highlight of the year.

Official: The 5th Season of Academy Idol will begin Sunday, November 13, 2011 with the announcement of this year’s contenders.  This is a space for you to start making suggestions of films that SHOULD be included in the Top 24.

The Academy Idol page is being finished up and redone so you’ll be able to go back and look at the past year’s winners which have included: David Fincher’s The Social Network, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, Andrew Stanton’s Wall-E, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood.

This year, we will be choosing twelve original films and twelve adapted films.  Any foreseen frontrunners as of now?  What films will you be rooting for?

We come now to part 3 of an annual tradition for me here at The Awards Circuit…my series of articles that deal with how to rank the chances of the various categories of Oscar contenders.  This one is as all encompassing a grouping of the hopefuls for Best Actor as possible (excluding some no shot contenders), categorizing them by their assumed likelihood of a nomination come the big morning.  A few things to keep an eye for this category specifically is that very little will have to do with which films get nominated for Best Picture, as opposed to when I discussed Best Director.  Quite often, only 1 or 2 of the Best Picture nominees winds up with any real damage in the acting categories.  This year, I think it will have a bit more correlation than usual, but I think there will definitely be at least one nominee from a film without any other major love.  It’s something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.  We shall see what happens, but that’s enough chatter for the moment.  Let’s take a look at the contenders for Best Actor and size up the field!

It’s Zooey… I mean Jess. Zooey Deschanel plays Jess in the new fun sitcom New Girl.

“Adorkable” has become the new catchphrase to describe this show and the character of Jess. And oddly enough it fits. New
Girl is the story of Jess (Deschanel) a girl who just dumped her boyfriend and is trying to find a new place to live. She finds an apartment on Craig’s list and the tenants are 3 guys. They vote on her living with them because her best friend is a model and they don’t want to hurt Jess’s feelings.

Over the course of the first show you see a sort of feeling of regret in the guy’s eyes when she begins living with them. Because of Jess’s break up she constantly watches Dirty Dancing and cries and the guys can’t take it anymore. They have a talk with her, get her back on her feet and after, you begin to see a real friendship grow between Jess and her men.
