This week is a busy one for the DVD/Blu-Ray market, and one market by a nice bunch of quality new titles, and one older one that’s currently tearing things up in theaters.  I’ll get to that one last, but among new releases there’s a trio of strong selections to choose from in terms of my top honors for the week.  As you all know, I like having to think a little before handing out my big prize.  This week, I went with the most mainstream choice of my contenders for my PICK OF THE WEEK.  It’s a film a surprising number of people ignored, but one with a lot going for it.  It’s:

Via Entertainment Weekly.

NBC’s biggest primetime gamble just became the first cancelled show of the season: The Playboy Club has been pulled from the network’s schedule.

The move is no surprise and, indeed, was expected months before the show premiered. The industry had low expectations for the 1960s set drama, which attempted to replicate a retro Mad Men vibe but for a wide audience and on a network with plenty of content restrictions.

"Dolphin Tale" (Warner Bros.)

A spunky romantic comedy, a mindbending suspense/thriller featuring Oscar winning talent, and one of the best received films of the year about a young cancer patient struggling with a life-altering diagnosis all could not match the interest and appeal of dolphins, baseball, animated lions, and Christian firefighters this weekend.  As box office receipts were tallied, Warner Bros. “Dolphin Tale” swam past “The Lion King 3D” and “Moneyball” and took the top spot at the box office this weekend, tallying $13.9 million in its second weekend of release.

For Warner Bros., “Dolphin Tale””s victory over the weekend was sweet vindication for a film and a project that seemed to be frozen out of its potential box office success by Disney’s surprising reception for their “Lion King 3D” re-release, which I reported on last week.  After initially claiming they would not hold “The Lion King 3D” in theaters for a third weekend, after winning the previous two weekend box office crowns, Disney went for the trifecta and but became victims of attrition and perhaps, ironically, their own marketing.  With “The Lion King 3D” arriving on home video today, October 4, 2011, the inevitable television campaign certainly stunted attendance.  While “Dolphin Tale” did not deliver a strong per screen average, the inspirational family drama did hold off “Moneyball” and four new contending films.  One of which, quickly and against expectations, became the talk of the weekend. War Horse is a masterpiece because we say it's a masterpiece, and we say it's a masterpiece because…

I try not to participate in Twitter spats, or even comment on them, for that matter.  99% of regular arguments are stupid enough, let alone ones confined to 140 characters over the internet.  This is also reason numero uno why I don’t follow Kris Tapley on Twitter or engage him in the comments on InContention anymore.  Life is too short.  There are times, however, when he thinks his little back-and-forths are so monumentally important that he expands them to a whole piece on his site, and predictably frames his point of view as a cold hard splash of reality on the poor misguided soul who thinks otherwise.

This time he decided that Nathaniel Rogers needed a good talking to after he made the rather obvious point that there are no “guarantees” in the Oscar race until we actually see the films in question.  This set him off: Read more on The REAL Trouble With “Locks”…

We finally know what will be Darren Aronofsky’s follow-up to the massive hit that was ‘Black Swan’.  While he was attached to ‘The Wolverine’ for a long time before ultimately pulling out, he had always kept amassing other projects that seemed more interesting.  None are more intriguing than the epic ‘Noah’…but who would be willing to pay for a risky and expensive film like that?  Well, Deadline is reporting that we now have an answer as to who will pay for Aronofsky’s vision.  Here’s their article:

Paramount and New Regency have formalized a deal to partner on Noah, the Biblical epic that Darren Aronofsky will direct as his followup to the Oscar-nominated smash Black Swan. Deadline told you in late June that Paramount was going to win a project after a bidding battle with 20th Century Fox to partner with New Regency. Apparently it takes less time to build an ark and survive a Biblical flood than it does to close a deal like this, but the partners have also locked in Gladiator scribe John Logan to rewrite the script by Aronofsky and Ari Handel. Aronofsky and Scott Franklin will produce it.

Well, it’s Charlie Kaufman after all, so you can’t expect much less than a unique viewing experience.  His upcoming second directorial project surrounding film blogging is a rather baity one, that’s for sure.  We already knew the plot would involve Steve Carrell as a director going to war with a film blogger played by Jack Black.  Nic Cage also co-stars, reuniting with Kaufman.  The flick is called ‘Frank or Francis’, and is high up on my most anticipated list.  Variety reports that the cast just got even more impressive.  Here’s their story on the casting:

The cast of Charlie Kaufman’s sophomore feature “Frank or Francis” just got a little more interesting, as Kevin Kline is now attached to tackle not one but two supporting roles in the film, which is slated to star Jack Black, Steve Carell and Nicolas Cage.

A satire of Hollywood set to music, project chronicles the back-and-forth between a movie director and an online blogger who delights in berating his cinematic talent.

Over at Awards Daily they have this interesting graph charting the current Oscar players, and I figured I’d share it here as well.  It gives a decent snapshot of where we are right now in the season, though it’s by no means a list worth taking as the gospel.  Here it is:

That’s the current 10 highest rated films of the year when you average out those scores. It doesn’t really reveal too much, but it does highlight some of the expected contenders.  After the jump is a further list of some other hopefuls…
