Apparently the New York Film Critics are going to be announcing their awards in a unique way next week…by using Twitter.  I’m sure many will be annoyed by this, but it doesn’t bother me one bit.  Anyway, here’s the Press Release:

Our first installment of David Cronenberg Week counts down my favorite films of his.  As I mentioned yesterday, Fast Company is the only Cronenberg feature that I have not seen, so I’m fairly confident in calling this top ten my most “definitive” yet.  While he has certainly made more than ten good films (and some stinkers in between), I chose the following films based not only on their obvious filmmaking qualities, but which ones best articulate and expand upon his dark fascinations.

There is bleak, there is challenging, and then there is “Tyrannosaur”, a film made in the tradition of the British “kitchen sink realism” movement of the 1960s and early 1970s.  Marking the directorial debut of actor Paddy Considine, “Tyrannosaur” is a brutal, uncompromising, and relentless look at the horrors of violence and the damage it inflicts, both short-term and long-term, on those it touches both directly and indirectly.

Considine focuses “Tyrannosaur” on two main characters, Joseph (Peter Mullan) and Hannah (Olivia Colman), who meet in a seemingly improbable manner with Joseph on the run and hiding out in the clothing rack of Hannah’s charity shop.  Joseph initially could care less that Hannah was in her store, and Joseph demands to be left alone.  However, Hannah quietly and sweetly persists in an effort to make conversation with the defiantly angry man amidst her clothing rack.

As many of you are well aware by now, A Dangerous Method is seeing its theatrical premiere this Wednesday.  And as I’m sure you can all guess, I’m quite excited for it.  Here is a film about two of the most interesting minds of the 20th Century, played by two of the most interesting actors of 21st Century, and the director chosen to helm could not have been more perfect to bring it to fruition: the modern maestro David Cronenberg.  One of the purest examples of an auteur, Cronenberg seems as fitting as anyone to bring the invention of psychotherapy to the big screen, as his career is a bit of a “talking cure” itself; connecting the sensations of the mind and body, pushing us through seemingly grotesque experiences to a kind of tranquil epiphany of humanity, and – especially in his later career – exploring the darkest recesses of the human psyche.
