    1. Excellent to see Albert Brooks come speeding out of the gate for Drive (no pun intended)…ironically, he won for this as he was being announced as a nominee at the Spirit Awards, but more on that later…

    2. Two early mentions for The Tree of Life, I like to see that. Joey, know you weren’t too keen on this film, but definitely one of those films that divides people. Hope Terrence Malick gets Best Director. Nothing yet for The Artist or The Descendants, kind of suprised.

    6. Wow just wow. I mean talk about a fun way to start this season. Incredible snub for “The Descendants”. No Clooney, no Payne. Nothing. They lost Gotham and Clooney wasn’t even nominated for Spirit. If him or his film don’t win NBR or score a Globe, I would consider it done. Huge surprise for Pitt. I thought they would lean more on DiCaprio but the reviews killed it. They instead went with Pitt so consider him a huge HUGE contender now. Ditto for Chastain. It would be awesome if they both won Oscars. Brooks win makes sense. Interestingly enough “Drive” sort of got a huge boost from this and the Spirit nominations. Ditto for “The Beginners”. Streep’s win reminds me of 2009 all over again. They will push for her. But if she doesn’t win Globe or SAGs consitently she won’t get OSCAR. Let’s be honest, “Sophie’s Choice” is probably Meryl Streep’s Magnum Opus and untimely her curse. She will only win her third Academy Awards if her praises are unanimous. Great way to start, but only time will tell if it will hold. “The Artist” win is sort of predicted. I don’t see NBR supporting the film that much. But yeah only time will tell how this will impact the race. Huge snubs besides for “The Descendants” are “Shame” and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” which was the last film they saw. I wonder if it got some runner up mentions.

    7. I am on record as being a passionate lover of THE DESCENDANTS but they have had a bad start, sans Shailene Woodley. The Spirit Award nods for THE ARTIST were confounding, as no one knew until this morning that it apparently was considered a U.S. production and thus qualified for all categories. I am outside the understanding of why Albert Brooks’ performance is so loved, although I am indeed a fan of his work in DRIVE and the film itself. Names like Chastain and Pitt and TREE OF LIFE across both pronouncements this morning were intriguing and Meryl Streep was not at all what I expected.

Pardon the narcissism, but if we refer back to my article on the NYFCC’s track record in christening future Oscar winners, the fortunes of THE ARTIST, Pitt, Streep, Chastain, and Brooks are far from locked, but they are well on their way to being nominees.

      What an awesome morning…

    8. Thats right albert brooks for Drive as I predicted accuratetly. It will undeniably garner much more attention as awards season continues. Just proves that skillfully made arthouse films can capture as much celebration as any.

    11. I couldn’t stand A Separation. Boring as hell. Then again, I thought the same for the also went on to be nominated Dogtooth. Incendies was a similar but much better film than A Separation.

If that’s the best of the foreign language nominees it’s going to be w-e-a-k. The stunning Oslo, August 31 wiped the floor with that drivel.

    12. I think we’ve all underestimated Moneyball. Pitt is definitely in and Best Picture, Screenplay and Supp. Actress are very likely. Miller is even looking good right now.
