- Last week saw reviews of Carnage, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse.
- The precursors began their runs, and to track their possible decisions Michael Ward analyzed the voting habits of the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review, while Joey Magidson previewed the Independent Spirit Awards. Editor Clayton Davis was a little off on his predictions for both groups, and wondered about what to make of the winners. Be sure to track them and future results on our Precursors page!
- In a huge break from critical consensus, I was repulsed by The Descendants.
- Clayton shared his brief thoughts on some of the awards players he was catching up on, including Martha Marcy May Marlene, Moneyball and J. Edgar.
- The Artist received a second (albeit less enthusiastic) endorsement from Joey, while giving a much stronger push for Shame.
- John H. Foote told us all to take Hugo more seriously as a viable awards player, as well as the prospects of The Help.
- John also wrote a big tribute to Brad Pitt while emphatically stating his continued support for Clooney’s Oscar bid.
- Joey’s DVD Pick of the Week was the “other” 2011 guilt-free sex comedy.
- To shed more spotlight on her performance in Another Happy Day, Joey gave Ellen Barkin an Under the Circuit treatment.
- Joey also concluded his ‘Sizing Up’ series with his take on Best Original Screenplay.
- There were zero new wide releases last weekend, but one highly provocative indie did make its theatrical debut…
- Finally, the results of Academy Idol 5: Director’s Week were unveiled, and ironically the most famous director in the world was knocked off. Be sure to keep the Academy Idol discussions going!
