    About Joey Magidson

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 200 and 300 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Internet Film Critics Association as well. Today the IFCA, tomorrow the world!

    1. Hey, Everyone look! It’s Alan Rickman nominated for best supporting actor… cool.

      • You would notice that one haha…though they snubbed Christopher Plummer.

        • Ya I liked seeing Rickman get nominated too. Glad to see John Goodman get a nomination. He’s one of my favorite actors of all time and is greatly underappreciated for his body of work.

    2. Strange. I found Hanna very entertaining and loved seeing Joe Wright stretch out, even if he seemed a little uncomfortable. Acting nominations though?!

I did love LA’s win for Hanna – though it isn’t nearly a patch on the mesmerising Drive score, that was the only other one that stood out to me that wasn’t traditional score music.

Those 6 nominations are odd, but you almost wish the Academy would stretch out like this sometimes: why do it just for film? Horrible to see people miss a slot in years where it’s too tough and strong to make it.

      • Yea…it was entertaining but forgettable to me, with the score as a highlight.

I’d be cool with the acting categories being 5-10 like Best Picture.

        • I actually hadn’t thought of that. I really like that idea. Whoever gets x percent of the vote gets nominated. No more than ten, no less than five. Either that, or separate acting and drama for each acting category – like an expanded version of the Globes. If I had to choose though, I would definitely choose Joey’s idea.

    3. Just tracking the Best Actor race, Pitt (NY, Boston), Fassbender (LA), Clooney (NBR, DC), Shannon (NYFCO), Oldman (SF), Harrelson (African-American) and Giamatti (Indiana) have all win something. What a crazy year, and that’s just the actors. I am hoping that Gosling would win one for Drive this year, even from a minor critic like this one, or Toronto or something. I think he does deserve it for his body of work this year. And Refn too.

    4. Wow … I think Blanchett was GREAT in Hanna, but a top 5 slot!?

I’m glad to see Missouri showing some love to Drive. :)

    5. I am becoming increasingly hopeful that Drive will garner multiple oscar nominations. I certainly did not believe it would receive as much attention from precursors as much as it has. I am looking forward to oscar nomination morning.
