I really like this list — a lot. It seems quite similar to what I would pick.
And per the review on this site the other day, look at the lack of nomination for Glenn Close and Albert Nobbs. That movie should have been more; but there just wasn’t much there and the same goes for Close’s performance. It was rather one-note and restrained. Not how one wins awards.
Go Drive!!! And Carey Mulligan getting some love for Shame. Also glad to see Theron get a slot.
Four technical nods for HP is something I expect to be repeating at the Oscars as well. But (of all people) where did Gary Oldman and Vanessa Redgrave disappear? If those two end up getting nominated for the Oscars, the BFCA is going to end up with egg on its face.
Well, HP gets snubbed from the top 10 (Thing, i cannot understand as this organization gave it one of the best reviews of the year) But, well this is the story for HP to the oscars:
Locks: Art Direction, Visual Effects
Very Likely but not certain: Sound Mixing, Make-up
Less Likely: Sound Editing, Make-Up, Original Score, Cinematography
NOT GONNA HAPPEN: Best Picture
I have been hoping for months for Harry Potter to be in the top 10 this year, but everybody considers it just a Harry Potter movie and nothing more. And it’s a shame because the final part was an epic film and deserves to be rewarded.
Ditto on Harry Potter. All around the nominations are pretty good with the exception of Redgrave, Malick and Shannon missing from their respect categories. Nicolas Winding Refn over Terrence Malick (confused face).
The other noms are good . Yeah I dont understand how they give it there best rating of the year and not a best pic nom. I guess I know one awards show I won’t be watching this year!
Looks like these are the locks for Best Picture as of now: The Artist, The Descendants, Hugo, Drive and The Tree of Life. War Horse and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close along with either The Help or Midnight in Paris, are my best guesses as to the rest.
Safe to say ‘Drive’ is a legitimate contender for more Oscar nominations outside of Brooks’ category now. Not guaranteed, but these nominations (especially for Gosling and Refn) help it’s case a lot.
Really surprised at the snub for Terrence Malick in the directing category. I thought he was supposed to win the Oscar. I really like all the love for Drive and Midnight in Paris. Glad to see Hugo get praise although I think it’s getting a little too much awards nom and wins (it is definitely a critic-pleasing movie though so I understand).
YES!!!! I first thought Drive (my favorite film of the year) was a goner except for Albert Brooks. Thank god I was wrong! 8 nominations, including Best Actor even! Big surprise there. Couldn’t be happier.
It’s definitely time to update the motion picture category, Hugo needs to be bumped up a bunch of spots as alot of people are going for it.
good to see the support for drive too!
I love the BFCA because they are so eclectic with their choices. However be warned. They love genre films. Remember how “Black Swan” had some crazy amount of nominations last year for things they didn’t even qualify for the Oscar’s for? I am very impressed at how “Drive” is holding up. Good showing from “Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close”, can’t say they same for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” which I saw last night at a free screening. Amazing. Not holding my breath for any Academy love I’m afraid. I would consider Close pretty done in the race. She has been missing from many nominations list and runner-up’s position. I would put Theron over her. Redgrave’s absence is strange to say the least and not a good sign for her. Just a side note. The BFCA has been known to crown future Oscar winning actors in their respective categories. So keep an eye for that. However wins those awards will become the sole front-runner in the race.
Also the joke of the day is who is tying with Streep. Lol.
Its great to see so much support for Drive on this message board. It received the most noms behind strong, predictable favorites such as Hugo and The Artist. Its certainly a contender for the oscar race. Expect it to receive at least five noms.
Sad for Michael Shannon BUT lets not forget Revolutionary Road, a few critics nods here and there, no SAG nom, no CC nod, no GG nod, and then an Academy Award nom.
Also I am very happy for Nick Nolte, glad to see Warrior hasn’t gone forgotten.
I wish though that at least ONE song from Bellflower would have gotten noticed. Best original music in a film for 2011 by far.
Gil Lima – I hope Michelle Williams ties with Streep! Lol.
I´m very disappointed not to see Vanessa Redgrave and Michael Shannon in this list… They chose Leonardo DiCaprio instead!?!?!?
Nice to see Andy Serkis in… But I guess it would just be TOO COOL to see him being nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Oh well… Pretty good nominations (once again, except for Leo).
Interesting. I can see the line-up being pretty close to this, at least for acting, the Houston critics seemed eerily close as well.
So could Serkis be groundbreaking and be the first motion capture actor nominated? He certainly fits the bill as he’s been snubbed before. More love for Drive and Bridesmaids, fantastic!
This list is going to be my guide. I’m surprised though that Margin Call received nothing.
DRIVE. KEEP THE TRAIN ROLLING.
No Payne and Mallick. I am actually surprised even BFCA chose to ignore them. The Direction nominees seems to have just BIG NAMES outside of Refn (off course and its a welcome nomination) …
