After notable turns in Melancholia, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Immortals, this has already been a big year for legendary British actor John Hurt. Now, two of the 10 remaining Live Action Short Films coveting an Oscar nomination feature Hurt front and center. The romantic Love At First Sight and the intensely dramatic Sailcloth star John Hurt who could pull off a feat of appearing in 2 Live Action Short Film nominees. Has that, you know, like ever happened? Hurt’s co-star in Tinker Tailor, Ciaran Hinds pops up in finalist The Shore, an Irish film directed by the Oscar-nominated writer and director of Hotel Rwanda. ‘Tis an intriguing mix and certainly a prediction busting category at your office pool, Oscar party, or “I can predict the nominees in all categories” boasting that you will encountering on January 24.
Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 live action short films will advance in the voting process for the 84th Academy Awards®. One hundred seven pictures had originally qualified in the category.
The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production company:

- “Raju,” Max Zähle, director and Stefan Gieren, producer (Hamburg Media School/Filmwerkstatt)
- “The Road Home,” Rahul Gandotra, director-producer and Ameenah Ayub, producer (London Film School)
- “The Roar of the Sea,” Ana Rocha Fernandes and Torsten Truscheit, directors (Niama Filmproduktion GmbH)
- “Sailcloth,” Elfar Adalsteins, director-producer (Berserk Films)
- “The Shore,” Terry George, director-producer (All Ashore Productions Limited)
- “Time Freak,” Andrew Bowler, director and Gigi Causey, producer (Team Toad)
- “Tuba Atlantic,” Hallvar Witzø, director (The Norwegian Film School/Den Norske Filmskolen)
The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in Los Angeles.
Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2012.
The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
