Every year at the Golden Globe Awards, the same TV shows are always nominated and the same actors win, and it always seems to get a little boring. This year many new shows and names are in the running to win including American Horror Story, Homeland and New Girl. Should be a fun show!

My predictions are listed below. Be sure to tune in Sunday at 8et/5pt on NBC for the 69th annual Golden Globes!

For Your Consideration – Best Supporting Actor – Corey Stoll
    Film: Midnight in Paris
    Director: Woody Allen
    Screenplay: Woody Allen
Realistic Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay
Oscar Scene: His answer to why he won’t read Gil’s manuscript

Of the many pleasures to be found in Woody Allen’s latest flick ‘Midnight in Paris’, the supporting turn by Corey Stoll as author Ernest Hemingway is chief among them.  No one expected this performance to be nearly as effective and memorable as it turned out to be.  Stoll is phenomenal playing the iconic literary figure, and absolutely steals the show.  Coming out of my initial viewing of the film, I left enthralled by the work and wowed by Stoll.  Subsequent viewings have only strengthened my convictions about him.  If any supporting actor currently out of the Best Supporting Actor conversation for the most part deserves to be thrown back in, it’s Stoll.  I’m somewhat convinced that the Academy won’t be doing so (the same goes for ACCA, but we’ll see), but there’s no reason not to try.  So, here goes nothing.  Let me put forward my Circuit Consideration for Corey Stoll in ‘Midnight in Paris’!

Disney continues their plan to re-release their classics in 3D with ‘Beauty and the Beast’, and the results should be just as successful for them, even if this time around the result isn’t quite as magical for me.  Granted, this is a fantastic film, but for some reason it didn’t sweep me off my feet like last year’s 3D treatment of ‘The Lion King’ did.  Honestly, I think the other critics at my screening felt the same way (this would have gone up early, but I wasn’t sure when the Embargo was up, so I played it safe), even though I’d say that for most they look at ‘Beauty and the Beast’ as the superior film to ‘The Lion King’.  This time around the 3D doesn’t add much at all (though it never quite detracts from the viewing), so it’s mostly just watching the same movie you love again in theaters.  That will likely deter almost no one, and it’s really my only caveat to the re-release.  The story is still delightful, but it’s not as essential to check this one out.  The tale of Belle and the beast that she learns to love is timeless, but I can’t make the case too strongly that you need to set aside your DVD and head to the multiplex.  Of course, if you decide to go, it won’t be as if you’re seeing an inferior product.  This is still one of Disney’s best works.

It is difficult to takae the Golden Globes all that seriously, yet it cannot be denied they often award the right films or performances and have lined up very close with the Academy more than once. The rumours thas get floated around around the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press being given vacations and expensive swag from the studios in hopes of swaying their votes, and of course then it works have done nothing to enhance the reputation of the organization. Where of course the award show is fun is the fact that there is liquor in abundance flowing throughout the night and more than one winner or presenter has wandered, drunkily to the microphone and slurred their words in acceptance or presenting. I remember Peter O Toole standing at the podium smashed, making an utter fool of himself yet the audience laughed along with him, perhaps happy in the fact it was not them up there at that moment.
