Last year's Oscar winners for Best Sound Mixing for "Inception" (L to R – Lora Hirschberg, Gary Rizzo and Ed Novick). Novick is a nominee again this year for "Moneyball".

The 2011 Nominees For Best Sound Mixing Are…

• THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
• HUGO
• MONEYBALL
• TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON
• WAR HORSE

At my annual Oscar party, invariably some assemblage of attendees always ask questions such as “What is Cinematography?” “How do they judge Art Direction?” and a rather common one, at least in my circles… “What is the difference between Sound Editing and Sound Mixing? How are we supposed to know the difference?”

To the lay movie fan, below-the-line work is often taken for granted and/or rarely, if ever, thought about. If a movie looks great, it looks great, but few people ever remark that the Director of Photography or Cinematographer’s work was fantastic. Sure the movie may look fantastic and the settings quite glorious, but who amongst your friends and loved ones have ever proclaimed that the art direction and set decoration work of [insert name] was exceptional.

And make no mistake, all of that is fine in a general sense. At the end of the day, people go to the movies to escape, to live another life or decompress from their daily affairs. People paying to see Transformers: Dark Of The Moon or Jack And Jill, or even a conventional dramatic Oscar contending film will simply not be concerned with how a film was lensed, how the sets were constructed, or possibly even be aware that the pacing and rhythm and sequencing of shots they enjoy are meticulously planned out and performed by an editor. At the end of the day, people just want to be entertained and not analyze every moment of the story they just experienced.

In the most recent Entertainment Weekly, there are a number of Oscar related articles of course, but one by Owen Gleiberman is of some particular interest. It’s called “The Academy Awards have undergone a sea change: They’re no longer about the audience” and Gleiberman makes an interesting point. I’m not sure that I completely agree with him, but kernels of truth are there to be found and it’s an article worth sharing. First of all, lets take a look at what exactly he wrote in EW

It’s somewhat unlikely that I’d be interested in a film about the biblical character Noah. I’m about as much a fan of religion and the bible as I am a fan of the Transformers films (or apparently Meryl Streep, as some less than thoroughly researched readers have attested to), but at the same token, I do happen to love the work of Darren Aronofsky. He’s never made a bad movie in my eyes and even got me into a movie involving ballet, so he certainly gets the benefit of the doubt here, and as his film Noah begins to shape up, I’m only into it more. Deadline has a quick little post that posits that Russell Crowe could be in line for the title role…

Across the pond one of the more interesting awards (to me at least) is always the Evening Standard Film Awards. I’ve always slightly preferred them to BAFTA, and this year is no exception at all. Shame and Tyrannosaur were the two films that did the best in terms of the nominations that have just been announced, and I have no issue there, plus The Guard got a bit of love as well, which makes me happy too. Let’s see what the full list of nominees looks like:

Best Film
“Archipelago”
“Shame”
“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”
“Tyrannosaur”
“We Need to Talk About Kevin”

Wow, Simon Cowell sure isn’t playing around. After streaming news circulated yesterday morning concerning host Steve Jones leaving X-Factor, followed by judge Nicole Scherzinger’s confirmed dismissal later that afternoon, a news report released this morning from The New York Times confirmed there were three cuts made from the British mogul in total. The final person given the axe from the U.S. version of the X-Factor is none other than Cowell’s close friend and fellow judge, Paula Abdul. Yep, that makes more than half of the U.S. ‘X-Factor’s’ on-air team, consisting of four judges and one host, whittled down to just two remaining players: judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid. Talk about making some massive changes! I’ll give you my reactions and possible predictions/suggestions for judges and a host that can fill the absent spots in light of Simon’s shocking yet necessary changes after the jump.
