Natalie Portman has been relatively quiet since winning the Oscar, most notably turning down the lead in Gravity, but it seems she’s back in the game now. Deadline has the details:

Natalie Portman has committed to her first two movie roles since winning the Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan and taking maternity leave. Portman is joining the casts of the Terrence Malick films Knight Of The Cups, and Lawless. Portman will join Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas in Knight of the Cups, which shoots this summer. She will follow by starring with Ryan Gosling, Bale, Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett in Lawless, the film Malick shoots in the fall. It will be Portman’s first time working with Malick, whose The Tree of Life won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and is nominated for Best Picture and Best Director Oscars.

Last year's Oscar winners for "Best Live Action Short" for 'God of Love'

Ah yes, the Academy Award’s “Live Action Short” category may turn a blind eye from many who watch the Oscars, even from the most die hard of moviegoers, who neither care nor wish to know about short films that are potential stepping stones for some of the hallmark directors in cinema. Just ask acclaimed director, Taylor Hackford, who won the award back in 1978 for his short film, “Teenage Father.” Hackford has gone on to head some of the best films of the past thirty years, including An Officer and a Gentleman, Dolores Claiborne, and Ray. Did I also forget to mention that Hackford is the current president of the Director’s Guild of America? Yep, this guy ran with his “Live Action Short” victory and took his career to heights that even he probably never would have imagined reaching. It just goes to show you that this award is something especially significant for an up-and-coming filmmaker, ready for their name to be worldly recognized and respected in the motion picture industry. So before we gloss over this award, think about the lasting effects it could have on one’s career in Hollywood, and what that motivational boost could mean for future full length features from these Academy Award recipients…

The 2012 Nominees for “Best Live Action Short” Are…

    • Pentecost – Peter McDonald and Eimer O’Kane
    • Raju – Max Zahle and Stefan Gieren
    • The Shore — Terry George and Oorlagh George
    • Time Freak – Andrew Bowler and Gigi Causey
    • Tuba Atlantic – Hallvar Witzo

The Visual Effects Society gave out their awards yesterday and pretty much confirmed my earlier suspicions in my Oscar Circuit piece on the Best Visual Effects category (found here if you missed it) that it’s a race between Hugo and Rise of the Planet of the Apes for the gold. Here are the full winners from the awards ceremony:

Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature: “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture: “Hugo”

Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Motion Picture: “Rango”

According to Deadline, neither of the nominees this year in the Best Original Song category will see their tunes performed during the Oscar telecast. Here’s the story:

It was bad enough that just about every eligible tune in the Best Original Song category was omitted from this year’s Academy Awards nominations. Or that, due to their complicated voting system, the music branch of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences saw fit to nominate only two songs: Rio’s “Real In Rio” and The Muppets’ ”Man or Muppet” when well-known artists like Elton John, Mary J. Blige, and Sinead O’Connor also had terrific songs in the mix. But now Deadline has learned that neither nominated song will be performed during the Oscar telecast as things stand now. We understand that both studios — Rio‘s Fox and The Muppets‘ Disney — formally protested the decision to skip but received turn-downs. ”It seems like a huge missed opportunity to me, and we certainly tried,” one song insider just told us. Said another song insider: “It doesn’t make sense. They could have so much fun with Muppets and Rio staging.”
