“Year in advance predictions …”
Uhm … you guys have some _________. (fill in the blank)
Thomas(Quote) (Reply)
We like to live dangerously…I’ve actually been working on a piece about next year’s nominations for a few weeks now. Just holding off until after the Oscars.
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
Enjoyed listening to it. You guys give really interesting insight into award predictions.
Super excited about Shame and Drive making it to the final 2. Those were my number 1 and number 2 films of 2011 respectively.

Thank you kindly!

On a quick personal note: I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the original Awards Circuit podcast from a few years ago that I did with Myles (along with the rest of the staff then), one that pre-dated the podcasts on all of the other Oscar sites…but this time around I think we’re on to something truly special, so it’s an exciting time.

An early Oscar prediction for 2013 presentation ?? How about Sally Field in Lincoln? Lead or supporting? I’m going with supporting at this time. I have to believe that people still “really, really like her”.
I do.
John C.(Quote) (Reply)
She’s lead in my first set of predix…

Very good podcast you guys. I really enjoyed this, and am looking forward to more. I especially love listening to Robert Hamer (which the support for Melissa McCarthy is probably the only thing we have ever agreed on). Keep up the great work.
Josh P.(Quote) (Reply)
Much obliged, and yes…Robert is a character.

I think Gosling is going to have another fantastic year. It looks like his reunitements with directors Nicolas Winding Refn and Derek Cianfrance will be released this year. Only God Forgives and A Place Beyond the Pines are almost completed! Can’t wait to see those. And this year, I feel like Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis will be the fan-boy cult movie of the year. This year is going to be an amazing year in film. Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson re team for Looper, Affleck goes behind the camera again, Andrew Dominik and Brad Pitt re team for Cogan’s Trade, and Gosling finishes off his second consecutive year of three film awesome-ness with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin in The Gangster Squad. Paul Thomas Anderson gets to direct Joaquin Phoenix. Tarantino gets to direct everybody except Gosling. Ridley Scott gets to direct Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Charlize Theron. Sam Mendes making a bond film! And of course, Nolan caps off his batman trilogy with everyone that was in Inception minus DiCaprio who’s going to have the best christmas ever. And then at the end of everything we get to watch Daniel Day Lewis get this third acting oscar! THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE SO AWESOME. CAN’T WAIT.
Alex LoSchiavo(Quote) (Reply)
Agreed, he’s a double nominee on my initial set of predictions. That Gosling is going places.
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
I have a nagging feeling that he’ll get a leading nomination for Pines and a supporting for Gangster Squad. Though I think he’ll give a tremendous performance in Only God Forgives, I think that film will be ignored by the Academy. If they ignore Drive, they’ll definitely ignore a movie from the same set of people about a Thai boxing fight. Gosling himself described the script as “the strangest thing I’ve ever read.” Which of course means film buffs and Refn fans will adore it, AMPAS will give it a sound editing nomination.
Alex LoSchiavo(Quote) (Reply)
That’s what I have currently…
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
Gosling is a supporting actor in both Gangster Squad and The Place Beyond the Pines. I agree he will probably be at his best for Refn’s Only God Forgives, but it is going to be too weird for the Oscars. But, I think the next time he gives an Oscar worthy performance in a Academy friendly film, possibly Terry’s next film, the Academy will jump on the chance to get him his overdue second nomination.
Jonas Andersen(Quote) (Reply)
Actually, he’s the lead as the man struggling with whether to commit a crime to provide for his family. Bradley Cooper as the cop with political aspirations is the supporting role in The Place Beyond the Pines…though Gosling is definitely supporting in Gangster Squad.
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
I was told back in last October that Gosling is in no more than 1/3 of the film, and that his character appears only in first act of the film. Cooper is definitely the lead of the film. I may be wrong though perhaps he has more screen time than I thought. Have to wait and see.
Jonas Andersen(Quote) (Reply)
I think it’s much closer to the opposite of that, but yes, we will see…
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
Enjoyed listening, great opinions. Thanks for answering my question!
Eric McCainley(Quote) (Reply)
Thanks for asking it!

If only there were more love for Malick…maybe next time. Though I haven’t completely given up hope yet like everyone else. He snuck in over a heavyweight favorite ya know.

Fair enough…
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
I’m predicting that the winning movie will star Carey Mulligan.
John Rivera(Quote) (Reply)
Not a bad bet at all, at this point at least…
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
Excellent podcast! I about died of laughter when Robert screamed, “HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL?!” when Clayton asked about the possibilities of the Descendants winning “Best Picture” in an upset. Obviously, words cannot describe my satisfaction with the final two remaining contenders in Academy Idol. So I’ll just do a backflip as a response.
Joseph Braverman(Quote) (Reply)
Much obliged.
Joey Magidson(Quote) (Reply)
I love listening to you guys. You should do it more often. You should also do a show talking about current movies, etc. I checked out that cooking guys blog. Amazing! Have you seen it.? He’s doing a super job saluting the nominated films with themed recipes. I think it’s a tie that I love food and movies just about the same. I’m getting my Oscar night food ready from http://www.cookingwithmrc.tumblr.com
Hope to blog with you guys on Oscar Sunday.
