It’s clear now that ‘The Hunger Games’ is an absolute smash, but it’s the fact that it’s breaking records that I find so interesting. This weekend it became only the 5th film ever to break the $200 million mark in its first 8 days of release. I was tipped off to this by Cinema Blend in their post, and you can see what they wrote after the jump, but I’m just fascinated by how well this movie is doing. Check out the news below…
You didn’t have to be a box office expert to predict a big showing for The Hunger Games this weekend, but all the same, Katniss Everdeen the Girl on Fire has already managed to break records. According to THR, The Hunger Games spent Friday becoming the fifth movie ever to make $200 million domestically in just eight days, notching an extra $18.9 million to kick off the weekend and bringing its total to $208.8 million. It’s on track to make around $60 million this weekend, which will help it easily trounce competition for the newcomers.

Joey … some of us made mention of this being a box office behemoth months ago
We even suggested you reading the book … but you don’t do “young adult”.
I am glad it is doing well … simply because it is a much better story than Twilight. (Not to mention that Katniss is actually a GOOD role model for girls opposed to Twilight’s Bella who suffered bruises in the last movie from the man she loves and she defended them as “okay!” HORRENDOUS message).
The Hunger Games trilogy is a good read … it is more mature/grown-up/universal than simply the genre is comes from and I DO believe why it has caught on. Males and females BOTH enjoy this book series whereas Twilight is primarily doted over by girls (and some grown women). ALL 3 books can be read in 5 days … if you devote some time to reading.

Ugh — typos …
“genre it comes from and I DO believe THAT is why …”

I realize, but the backlog of books on my Kindle is long enough (I literally have 33 books I haven’t read yet that I’d like to), this one just isn’t likely to get a read from me anytime soon.

Could this be the first BP contender this year? “Award’s Daily” had an interesting article about it. I think that after Harry Potter last year, it will take a masterful piece of a young adult material to make it in the Academy. Besides that I do see some technical categories for the film. Definitely make-up and costume as of right now. Maybe some sound here and there?

The Hunger Games is a fantastic film but I don’t see it being a Best Picture contender… If it is still remembered come oscar time, yes on the tech categories but I think that’s as far as it will go.

We discuss it on the upcoming Power Hour Podcast, but I’m rather skeptical of it getting any major Oscar love. Each year there’s similar chatter about films like this that are critically acclaimed blockbusters…just look last year at Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Not a Best Picture contender … which doesn’t mean it isn’t still entertaining and good.
IF it is remembered for anything come Oscar time it will be make-up, costume and art direction; but that would be it.

Of course, and I found it very entertaining.

I saw the picture. I enjoyed more in spots than as a whole. The whole first 45 minutes of set up gets very long. Once we get into the games, so much good stuff happens “off screen” that we have to settle for Katniss maternal scenes with Rue and then the sappy love story when we are really hunger for action. As the movie premise is set up, it’s fight each other until one remains standing, yet we hear of a lot of deaths off screen (the canon) . When Dayo kills Clove to save Katniss, I did not believe he woul dnot have killed Katniss as well.
Rue’s death and Katniss’ grieving for her went on forever. We needed to see more action of the hunt. A lack of good direction and pacing makes the movie bog down in the middle. It could certainly have been a better movie. I don’t see it as best picture or best actress contender at all.

I agree that it’s not perfect and likely not a real awards contender, but it certainly has its pluses.
