Once known as ‘What’s Wrong with Virginia’, the directorial debut of Dustin Lance Black was one of the biggest failures of the 2010 Toronto Film Festival after it entered the fest as a possible awards contender (lead Jennifer Connelly was a dark horse Oscar pick for some). Even the filmmaker himself has acknowledged its problems, and recently went back into the editing room in an effort to save the movie. Now simply retitled ‘Virginia’, we finally have a trailer in advance of a mid May release date. You can watch it after the jump, but I’m not expecting this to do too much (the luster is off of Black a bit after ‘J. Edgar’, though I’m still a big fan of ‘Milk’). See for yourself though below…

We haven’t spoken much about the coming together of the film ‘Hitchcock’, but it’s certainly a movie that I have high hopes for. Starring Anthony Hopkins in the title role, the film takes place during the making of ‘Psycho’ which should be enough for most of you to be excited. After the jump we have our first glance at Hopkins as Hitchcock, as well as the press release touting the beginning of principal photography (it actually started last week, but the announcement got lost in the shuffle…apologies). You can see how good he looks below, but I think we know at least one category that the film will be very competitive in when it opens. Those makeup artists may be smart to start writing Oscar speeches right now…

I said it on the podcast when the topic came up, and I’ll say it again here. Anyone who thinks that David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuaron, or Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu are seriously eager to direct ‘Catching Fire’ are being overly optimistic. With the exception of Cuaron’s well regarded installment of the Harry Potter franchise, they aren’t good fits for the type of production that this sequel is shaping up to be. I’ve mentioned a few names I’d like to see Lionsgate go after, and while they haven’t listened to me (at least not yet, anyway), a rumor over at The Playlist suggests that a few more realistic names are in play. The directors now being added to the wish-list are Francis Lawrence and most interestingly Bennett Miller. After the jump, I’ll get into whether or not they’re actually good choices, but it’s clear that the production is aiming slightly lower now, especially with a tough shoot/release schedule planned for the flick…

Continuing the ongoing trend of small updates in regard to any news of Quentin Tarantino’s latest film ‘Django Unchained’ (both here at The Awards Circuit and on the internet in general), we now have the official synopsis of the flick to share. It doesn’t reveal really anything that we don’t know already about the much anticipated film, but it suggests a very entertaining movie, and it’s nice to see it come from The Weinstein Company instead of just internet chatter or script reviews. Tarantino’s works always have plenty of surprises anyway (both big and small), so a virginal cinematic experience is certainly still in store for audiences, even with this synopsis on display now. Take a gander after the cut to see what QT and TWC have in store for us at the end of 2012, but I think it’s safe to say that just about everyone here at the site is going to be checking this out when it opens on Christmas. It may or may not be a big Oscar player in the end (Tarantino has sort of been feast or famine in that regard historically), but I’m confident that it’s going to be fun to watch…

Pixar’s ‘Brave’ may be the Disney animated feature on everyone’s minds right about now (likely rightfully so), but ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ is another release of the Mouse’s with some real potential for quality. It’s about a villain (also the film’s namesake and to be voiced by John C. Reilly) in a classic 8-bit video game that wants to transition into being a hero and causes all sorts of trouble in the arcade that he resides when he moves to a new first person shooter and unleashes a real bad guy. It sounds like a lot of fun to me, and after the jump you can see the Teaser Poster for the flick. It may be a player for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, or it may just be purely a commercial endeavor, but it sounds good either way. I don’t know about you, but count me in for this one when it hits this coming November…
