While The Avengers continues to gather buzz as it approaches its release date, Marvel is gearing up for the next set of films starring individual members of the Avengers team. First up will be Iron Man 3 and Variety is reporting that Guy Pearce is signing on to join the Shane Black directed sequel as geneticist Aldrich Killian.

In the comics, Killian was responsible for for developing the Extremis serum, an attempt to replicate the Super Soldier serum, that both Tony Stark and terrorist use to make themselves more powerful. From this description it’s hard to know whether Pearce will play an ally or an enemy. With Ben Kingsley having recently signed on to play one of the film’s villains, it will be interesting to see what writer/director Shane Black has planned for Pearce’s character.

Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Scarlett Johansson all return and filming is expected to start soon in Willmington, NC for a May 3, 2013 release.

    2. As long as Robert Downey Jr. is in it, that’s what counts.
