    Tony Nominations Announced!

"Once" adaptation leads the pack with 11 nominations

    May 1, 2012

Who would have though that adaptations of a movie musical flop, an indie movie set in Dublin and a re-imagining of the greatest American opera would be in line for Broadway’s biggest award? The Tony Awards announced their nominees today with Once, an adaptation of the movie musical which won an Oscar for Best Original song, leading the way with 11 nominations. Two Gershwin musicals, The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and Nice Work if You Can Get It tied for 2nd with 10 nominations. Newsies, which flopped as a movie (starring a young Christian Bale!) but is earning raves on the Great White Way, is next in line with 8. On the play side, Peter and the Starcatcher, which tells the origins of Peter Pan, lead the way with 9 nominations and the revival of Death of a Salesman with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Andrew Garfield racked up 7 nominations.

The full list of nominees is available after the jump.

    New Dark Knight Rises Trailer

How will the Batman franchise end for Christopher Nolan?

    May 1, 2012

July 20th, 2012, the day the last entry in Chrisopher Nolan’s Batman saga, The Dark Knight Rises, graces the screen. After the start of a viral marketing campaign that revealed frames of the trailer, they’ve released the full trailer.

After the jump, we get a good look at Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman (who’s afraid of Bane?), more Bane menace, Joseph Gordon Levitt actually saying a few lines, and the bleak world Batman find himself fighting in. Also, the voice issues with Bane seem to have been fixed.

    The Avengers (***½)

Marvel's "The Avengers" is explosively entertaining thanks to Whedon and its performers...

    May 1, 2012

The first blockbuster of the 2012 summer movie season also happens to just plain old be one of the best films of the year so far. ‘The Avengers’ could have gone wrong in a ton of different ways, but almost inexplicably it’s a massive success. With only a few small flaws to blemish its record, this film is a testament to how much of a coup it was to hire Joss Whedon to write and direct the project. He gets to the core of what this movie should be about. It’s not about explosions and fights, but instead about community, loneliness, and the need for teamwork in the face of long odds. This is not only the best film to come from Marvel’s production company, but it’s easily one of the 5 best superhero films to date (it’s your move, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’). Whedon has taken the best of each previous Marvel film and, with one or two flaws aside, cobbled together pretty much the ideal Avengers film, rife with strong performances, surprisingly effective humor, and more than a touch of heart. It’s like a great comic book come to life, and you’re left just as giddy as a young child first discovering the tales of heroism within those books and diving right in. Between this and co-writing ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, Whedon is the man of the hour in many parts of the film world. ‘The Avengers’ isn’t perfect, but then again, neither are heroes tasked with saving the Earth, and we still love them. I have no doubt that you all will love this film when it opens on Friday.

As The Voice gets closer and closer to the grand finale night — a week away, astonishingly — my heart breaks just a bit knowing that half of Teams Cee Lo and Adam will be cut. How could America make us lose two of this elite foursome: Katrina Parker, Tony Lucca, Jamar Rogers, and Juliet Simms? The four alone are arguably some of the most gifted singers in America today, and it pains me to know that the consistently inconsistent teams of Christina and Blake will get a shot at the winner’s crown as well. Jermaine Paul, Lindsey Pavao, Chris Mann, and Erin Willett all proved how out of depth they are compared to the rest. Perhaps Lindsey is the exception (although her coffeehouse performance set her career back a few pegs), but not a single individual from Teams Christina and Blake brought an ounce of originality or vocal supremacy to their performances last night. Before I start unloading on this week’s incredibly divided talent, I would just like to say that this season, despite its ups and downs, has been a success for the most part. Sure, it may not have been as exciting as the inaugural season’s freshly minted process to find the best vocalist in America, but I have a feeling I’m going to be satisfied with the winner this year no matter what happens. To me, the end result is the most important, so let’s just hope that someone from Teams Cee Lo and Adam walks away victorious this season. With that said, let’s get right down to some review sessions… Read more on ‘The Voice’ Recap: The Semifinals…

Joey’s DVD Picks of the Week (5/1/12)

Check out this week's DVD releases...

    May 1, 2012

This week, we’re treated to another average slate of Blu-Ray/DVD releases, but one that certainly has a worthy top choice for those in the mood for something action-oriented (not to spoil my choice or anything). Two weeks from now we’ll have a strong bunch of films to talk about, but for now let’s just remember that things could be worse here. For my PICK OF THE WEEK I really only had one choice, but it’s one that I can back whole-heartedly, so that’s good at least. Those with a little knowledge of the calendar and what films of this ilk I enjoyed recently can guess already what the title in question is, but for everyone else, there’s no need for surprise here. It’s: Read more on Joey’s DVD Picks of the Week (5/1/12)…

Though Frederico Fellini made 8 1/2 which had similarities to his life, Fellini, one of cinema’s most respected auteurs, has never had a film made about him. Homeland writer/director Henry Romell is trying to change that, focusing on an intriguing part of Felini’s life . Variety is reporting that Romell is set to direct Fellini in Black and White, an indie film about Fellini with Elite Squad‘s Wagner Moura tapped to play the famous director. The story would take place during March of 1957, when Fellini went missing for 48 hours before he was supposed to attend the Academy Awards and will postulate on “what might have happened during those 48 hours; finding the filmmaker discovering the jazz and surf scenes and falling for a veterinarian while his wife tries to drown her sorrows by cavorting with Ricky Nelson.” Terrence Howard will play a jazz musician who introduces Fellini to the music world, William Macy will play Fellini’s publicist and Peter Dinklage will play the vet’s lover.
