I was a big fan of ‘Kick-Ass’ when it came out a few years ago, even going so far as to praise it in an early Script Review here at the site. The potential for a great sequel is certainly there, though I never found it to be a moral imperative for it to be made or anything (bonus points for knowing what movie I’m referencing by saying “moral imperative”). Well, it looks like Universal is in talks to continue the franchise, according to Deadline here, and sadly it won’t be with Matthew Vaughn writing or directing (though Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are in talks to reprise their original roles). Instead, it’s Jeff Wadlow of ‘Cry Wolf’ and ‘Never Back Down’ fame. After the jump I’ll share my thoughts on the project, but in short…I’m not exactly thrilled with the choice of Wadlow.
Now, supposedly Vaughn is fully supportive of Wadlow as the choice to make this sequel and backs his script, but he’s so far been a below average filmmaker at best, so I’m somewhat concerned. I’m pleased that most, if not all, of the original surviving cast will be back, but they would be better suited with Vaughn back at the helm, or someone closer to his level. Maybe Wadlow can surprise me (I’ll never discount the possibility that a writer or a director can elevate his or her work with the right motivation/project), but for now, he’s cut down on my excitement for another installment of ‘Kick-Ass’. Stay tuned for more…
