Up until last year, many did not know the name of Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, but he took the world by storm with his incredible film, A Separation. He was one of the darlings of the Oscar season, with the likes of Spielberg and Streep championing his work and everyone in Hollywood, including Angelina Jolie, was lobbying to work with the director. At the end of the season, Farhadi announced that his next project would be set in France  and in an interview with Farhadi’s producer, Alexander Mallet-Guy, Screen Daily has learned that Oscar Marion Cotillard has been cast in his next film. Cotillard, who is recieving raves for her role in Rust & Bone, will play the lead role in the film that Mallet-Guy promises “will be an emotional social thriller in the vein of A Separation, with multiple twists aimed at keeping the audience in suspense from the first frame to the last.”

As a fan of Farhadi and Cotillard, this news is fantastic. A Separation was one of last year’s best movies, dealing with the moral complexities of life, religion, and justice. Anyone who has seen that film knows the type of performances Farhadi gets out of his actors so I’m thrilled to see what kind of performance he can pull out of Cotillard. Due to the strict censorship laws in Iran, many were worried about how Farhadi would deal with filming in the country and would he be banned. Now that he’s decided to film in France and cast one of the world’s top actress, we should be able to enjoy another quality film from the director.

    3. Wonderful news! After a few years of really not liking Marion Cotillard as an actress, she turned things around for me in last year’s “Midnight in Paris.” I was drawn to her alluring beauty and affection for nostalgia. This pairing leaves me incredible excited. Farhadi is a master of the screenplay. That “original screenplay” category should have been his for the win this year. Thank you for the news, Terence. I know this is completely off-topic, but doesn’t Marion Cotillard look like Mila Kunis in this picture? Doppelganger alert!
