    With Cannes Film Festival in full force, there’s been a flurry of news coming out so here is your Late Pass with a little bit of a Cannes flair.

    Cannes Update

    The Cannes Film Festival is well underway. Several films have been met with universal praise like MysteryBeasts of the Southern Wild, No and Rust & Bone. Of course since this is Cannes there were boos as well.

    Production News

    The colorist responsible for Avatar‘s vibrant screen quality, Skip Kimball, is joining Technicolor - The Hollywood Reporter

    Oscar whisperer Harvey Weinstein traveled to Cannes and has acquired a documentary about the fall of Gaddafi. Will this steal some of the thunder from Zero Dark Thirty this awards season? - The Hollywood Reporter

    Specialty News

    The Exorcist, named the scariest movie of all time, is being adapted for the stage and will premiere at the Geffen Playhouse with Brooke Shields and Richard Chamberlin. The power of Christ compels you…to go see the show if you’re in Los Angeles. – Geffen Playhouse

    Criterion has announced their August titles. The Royal Tenenbaums, two films from the Dardenne Bros, and the 2011 indie Weekend lead the list. – Criterion

    For all you film historians and enthusiasts, a new book detailing the 100 Ideas That Changed Film was just released. Some of the entries include Magic Lanterns, Film Scores, and Queer Cinema. – Brain Pickings

    Casting News

    Chris Pine, who has been in Cannes promoting his upcoming film Rise of the Guardians, will star in a script he wrote called Mantivities. The flick will center around a group of 30 something friends who are stuck in various states of adolesence – Deadline

    The casting for Maleficent is ramping up. Juno Temple, who can next be seen in Killer Joe, has just been cast as the 3rd fairy sent to protect Princess Aurora – The Hollywood Reporter

    James Franco has cast a gang of actors including Mila Kunis and Olivia Wilde, for his adaptation of two poetry books. Interesting thing is the first film, Tar, will have segments directed by 10 NYU students who won a contest he sponsored this past year. – Collider
