Here is the first trailer from Baz Luhrmann’s (Moulin Rouge!) The Great Gatsby, an adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that stars Leonardo DiCaprio (in the titular role), Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton.

It looks decent enough for a first teaser, and while it may be too soon to say how strong of a contender the film will be in the major categories, I can’t imagine it not being a major player for the Costume Design and Art Direction awards, at the very least. Let’s hope this is more Moulin Rouge! Luhrmann than it is Australia Luhrmann. I’ve kinda got a bad feeling about it, I don’t know. We’ll find out on Christmas Day.

    About Mark Johnson

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Lost, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.

    1. I was wondering if Eckleburg’s eyes would show up in that trailer, and there they are at 1:55…

    2. Can Luhrmann EVER restrain his need for theatrics?

      • It wouldn’t be a Baz Luhrmann picture otherwise.

        • And that is why I am not a fan of Luhrman films. Theatrics can be entertaining, but if that is all you have then I am not on board with it. You need something to back it up. Maybe someday he will get that.

    3. Oh no, was that an accent I heard? This could get iffy… And the trailer doesn’t seem too promising. This seems like the 20′s through a Hunter S. Thompson lens. More Romeo + Juliet than Moulin Rouge or Australia. I was cautiously optimistic…now less so. Maybe the 3-D will make it better…?

    4. This looks very epic. Epic in terms of Australia more than Moulin Rouge.

    5. It’s a trailer kids. Trailers are meant to get butts in seats. Thus the excitement, glamor, music in the background. No one does this better than Baz. For all who despair, I say phooey.

      • Totally right there with you Joey. It just feels like all flash, little substance. Yes we did not actually see a lot of story in this trailer, but that is part of the problem. The trailer is trying to sell its glitz, flair and hipness (the moment the music started my heart sunk) more than the fact it is a movie based on a classic piece of literature. They did not even mention that fact it is based on a book until the very end and it was in small font! Can it magically turn itself around with the actual film? Maybe. Right now though, whatever mild hopes for it being more than just glitz has been diminished.

    8. I liked this trailer. Cinematography and acting looks stunning, director has his style and this clasical novel will take quite interesting type of interpretation.

    9. This trailer basically just confirmed for me what I thought this was going to be: a really, really flashy adaptation. Which I’m totally cool with! Baz’s particular flair should mesh with Jazz Age culture really well, so unless there’s some kind of disaster in the writing or acting departments, count me in.

    10. Not sensing much of a story yet but, as you say, it’s a first trailer. Looks impressive. Has some Moulin Rouge-esque moments to it.

    11. In the beginning I was excited for this film but after seeing the trailer I lost all hope. I didn’t get the same feeling when I read the book and saw the original with Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Karen Black and Scott Wilson. There were things I did like but over all I feel as if I don’t want to see it. It’s too flashy, glamorous and the jazz is not even there.
