  • Venice Film Festival may screen ‘The Master’ and ‘To The Wonder’

The two Oscar hopefuls will be seen at the Italian festival...

    May 29, 2012

Now that the Cannes Film Festival has come to a close, we can now turn our attention to the more Oscar centric festivals that we’ll be seeing in the coming months (mainly the fall). First up is the Venice Film Festival, and the new artistic director of the fest is looking to have some high profile debuts, according to The Hollywood Reporter here. After the jump you can see a few more names and my thoughts, but right at the top is Paul Thomas Anderson with ‘The Master’ and Terrence Malick with ‘To The Wonder’. Will they actually show up? Well, check out my quick thoughts below…

In addition to PTA and Malick, new director Alberto Barbera also mentioned Brian DePalma and his new film ‘Passion’, along with Italian filmmakers Silvio Soldini, Marco Bellocchio and Gabriele Salvatores as well. Factor in potential other entries like Derek Cianfrance’s ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ and Joe Wright’s ‘Anna Karenina’, this could be a high quality fest. The thing is, maybe half of these flicks will actually play, so it’s all speculation right now. The festival doesn’t start until the end of August though, so stay tuned for more information on the slate when we have it!

    About Joey Magidson

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 200 and 300 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Internet Film Critics Association as well. Today the IFCA, tomorrow the world!

      • I’d say it’s 50-50 right now, but at least one high profile title like this will debut…I wouldn’t bet against both showing, but there’s no way of knowing for sure quite yet.

    5. Another point of view — if the films screen in Venice there is a chance they WILL NOT screen at TIFF and frankly I would rather see them at TIFF than ending up in Venice — purely selfish reasons — there is cross over from both fests sometimes, but my fear is that if The Master plays Venice it will not be at Toronto — in favor of TIFF is that both Boogie Night (1997) and Punch Drunk Love (2002) were screened for TIFF — hopefully The Master comes to Toronto….I hope, I hope, I hope….

    8. I’d consider going to toronto to see it if it ends up there. At least I might have a shot at seeing it projected the right way at a premiere. I doubt my local theater is equipped for 65-75mm :(
