Up until ‘Drive’ last year, I’d yet to really embrace Nicolas Winding Refn as a filmmaker (even ‘Bronson’ was lacking to me), but now he’s very much got my attention. Now, according to The Playlist here, he’s looking to adapt the graphic novel ‘Button Man: The Killing Game’. It’s not necessarily going to be his next project, as he’s got plenty to choose from, but it’s certainly in the hopper. After the jump you can see what else he’s got in the works, as well as what this film is about, but at the moment I’ll see anything he’s got planned. Winding Refn has evolved as a director and at this point he’s as exciting as anyone else in the business…

Tim Burton has certainly not fared well quality wise in his last few years, but Frankenweenie might be the director’s return to form. Going back to his roots so to speak, Frankenweenie is a stop motion adaptation of a live action short film Burton directed in the 80s. The film won’t be released till October 5th but Disney has come out with a pretty fun new poster for the flick which you can see after the jump.

Last night, I was fortunate enough to be invited to the celebration of the Art Directors Guild’s 75th Anniversary at the Hollywood Museum. It’s pretty remarkable to think that a guild so integral to the movie-making process has managed to sustain itself as such a strong collective for all these years. With nearly 2,000 members in the ADG, this talented group of artists have given us some of the most elaborate and visually euphoric experiences we could ever hope to see in cinema. Remember how fear crept inside you when you witnessed the atmospheric setting of the human spaceship in Ridley Scott’s Alien? How about that cantina scene in Star Wars that fulfilled George Lucas’ promise of taking viewers to a “Galaxy Far…Far…Away”? All those artistic components that enhanced the feel of a film’s universe owe its entire thanks to the film industry’s Art Directors Guild. Below, I will give you a brief history of the ADG, followed by some images of their greatest contributions to cinema that I was able to photo-capture inside the Hollywood Museum.

With ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ getting closer and closer, news and juicy bits about the film are coming out. There’s a bunch of interesting ones from Collider here, but the most fascinating of which was that apparently Warner Brothers was very eager to get Christopher Nolan to use The Riddler as the villain and to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in the role. I wouldn’t have hated that, but I’m glad that Nolan got to maintain his vision unencumbered by any studio interference that we know of. After the jump you can see some other tidbits from the flick (including how this will be the last bit of DP work from Wally Pfister), but at this point we’re just counting the days. July can’t come soon enough…

- I hope you all had another great week with us here at The Awards Circuit! What stood out this week? Amongst other things, Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis and the entire AC Staff revealed their mid-year Oscar 2013 Predictions! Did Cannes affect our choices? Indubitably yes, but check out each of our predictions to see how much that esteemed festival course-corrected our prognostications. Am I the only one crazy enough to think that Marion Cotillard and Daniel Day Lewis will win the top acting prizes together once more? Probably so, but what’s an Oscar show without a few surprises and historical moments!?
