On Monday, June 4th, Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie celebrated her 37th birthday. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1975 to actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, she is the younger of two children. At age 11, she enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute where she attended classes for two years before changing her mind on acting in favor of becoming a funeral director. She spent the rest of her adolescent years rebelling like most teenagers with long periods of depression before returning to her theater studies after graduating high school.

She appeared in several smaller roles and low-budget films before winning the Golden Globe Award for her performance as the Alabama Governor’s second wife in TNT’s George Wallace. The following year she would receive acclaim for her performance as supermodel Gia Carangi in HBO’s Gia, and ended up winning back-to-back Golden Globe Awards as a result. The portrayal also won her the Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG). In 1999, Jolie landed a supporting role as mental patient Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted. This would bring Angelina her third Golden Globe, her second SAG, and her first Academy Award (Best Supporting Actress).

After appearing in Gone in 60 Seconds, she became the next great female action star in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider as well as its sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. This series of action films led her to a role opposite Brad Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where controversy followed the two stars as rumors about a relationship began to spread. An on-set affair is alleged to have been the reason between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s divorce, though Jolie has denied that anything intimate happened at that time. Pitt and Jolie have been together ever since, and have six children together (three by adoption). The couple is widely known for their humanitarian work all around the world, notably in Cambodia, Pakistan, and the Darfur region of Sudan.

In 2008, Angelina would receive her second Academy Award nomination for Clint Eastwood’s Changeling. She has directed the documentary A Place in Time, which captured life in multiple locations around the world during one week, as well as her first feature film In the Land of Blood and Honey, a love story between a Serb soldier and a Bosniak prisoner, which is set during the Bosnian War.

Her upcoming work includes playing the title role of Maleficent in the Sleeping Beauty-based tale that is told from the evil nemesis’ perspective, as well as reprising her Evelyn Salt character in Salt 2. Both films are slated for a 2014 release.

My Circuit: 3 for Angelina Jolie are:

    1. Girl, Interrupted (1999)
    2. A Mighty Heart (2007)
    3. Kung Fu Panda (2008)
