It was a fairly successful weekend at the box office for two new films in release. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted took top honors, hauling in an impressive $60.4 million. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus finished second with $50 million ($23 of which came out of my pocket after an encore viewing). Between the sale prices of 3-D tickets and the built-in fan base for both franchises, the early success of the two movies is no surprise. How they will each hold up over the next few weeks will be the real test – especially with Disney/Pixar’s Brave right around the corner. You can read Michael’s 3-star review for Prometheus here, Robert’s 1 and a half-star review here, or listen to Terence, Joey, and I discuss the film on our podcast, here.

Check out the rest after the jump…

Snow White and the Huntsmen brought its domestic total to $98.5 million after 3rd place earnings of $23 million this weekend. The old target of hitting $100 million dollars seems a bit outdated at this point, no? After its decent success, news came last week that Universal is on their way to delivering a sequel for the fairy-tale based film.

Men in Black 3 and The Avengers round out the top five this week, at $13.5 million and $10.8 million, respectively. The Avengers domestic intake now stands at  $571.9 million, while world wide it has brought in an insane $1.396 billion. Somehow The Hunger Games, released in March, is still in theatres and has now passed the $400 million mark, domestically.

    Recap:

    1. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – $60.4 million
    2. Prometheus – $50.0 million
    3. Snow White and the Huntsman – $23.0 million
    4. Men In Black 3 – $13.5 million
    5. The Avengers – $10.8 million

    1. I was personally glad to see Safety Not Guaranteed do well in limited release…

      • That, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel all doing well. Interested to see if the latter could be a lesser version of Midnight in Paris this year. I don’t think it is a Best Picture contender, but I could see it getting recognized in the Adapted Screenplay field if the voters love it – which I’m sure the older crowd does. It’s a charming enough film to see it happen without much shock.

        • Moonrise and Marigold both would like to be this year’s Midnight, but I don’t think either of them are of that quality, or have that sort of following, to be honest.
