I don’t know about you, but something about the style of these first two teaser’s for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master have me completely on the edge of my seat. Maybe it’s the music, or the interesting characters, or the seemingly jaw-dropping performances we are getting an early look at. Maybe it is just the fact that this is a film by PTA, and we have all come to expect brilliance from him, and the trailer does nothing to make us think The Master will be anything less. I don’t want to put too high of expectations on the film, but… too late.
The second teaser is gifted in the same fashion as the first one that came out of Cannes, only this time we get our first look at Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Would anyone be too surprised to see the trio (Joaquin Phoenix being the third) walk away all holding Oscars this year? It is a long shot for something like that to happen, sure. But damn do they all look good. Especially Phoenix. He has to be the favorite right now, whether Supporting (which I’m assuming) or Lead (which others are speculating). October 12th seems so far away right now.

I’m sorry, but it’s kind of obvious that Phoenix is the lead. This trailer has him billed before Hoffman.

It appears that way, but every synopsis that has been released has focused on Hoffman’s character – which also just so happens to be the titular role. There is no denying that the trailers seem to focus on Phoenix, but keep in mind we have only seen two teasers so far.
Regardless of Lead or Supporting, he looks incredible. I can’t imagine him not getting in one way or the other.

I don’t know that something else is going to keep me as interested this year. While I’m looking forward to Lincoln, Life of Pi, Django, To the Wonder, etc., this one’s probably going to top my list in the end.

Very much like Les Misérables’ trailer, this seems to be showcasing Joaquin Phoenix’s character and therefore putting him on the spotlight more than the film itself. This is Oscar campaign 101. Like Hathaway, Phoenix should be put on the top of the list for his respective supporting category. Not until their films come out will we really know if their character become larger than the film itself, and therefore viable for a lead contention.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was billed first for “Chicago” and went supporting and won.
Same thing can happen for Phoenix.

Phoenix is definitely rising as a favorite, the billing has changed – it could mean nothing, but I’m still determined he may be more of a lead. If not, both Hoffman and Phoenix are.
But, two leads for the same film have not been nominated since 84′s “Amadeus”. Anything is possible, of course.

Looks like they aged Phillip Seymour Hoffman by 10-15 years, either way looks fantastic.
