Director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) re-teams with Keira Knightley in a new telling of the classic Leo Tolstoy novel, Anna Karenina. The rest of the cast includes Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Kelly MacDonald, Olivia Williams, Ruth Wilson and Holliday Grainger.
Is it me, or does Aaron Johnson seem horribly miscast in this role? It’s hard to tell from the trailer, but I have early suspicions. Other than that, it certainly has the look and feel of a contender, especially in several below the line categories like Costume Design, Art Direction, and Cinematography. But will this be the performance to earn Ms. Knightley her first Academy Award?
Anna Karenina opens in the U.K. on September 7th and in the U.S. on November 9th. Check out the trailer and the poster for the film after the jump…

The British voting body has something to go for big time this year. And the BAFTA goes to…Anna Karenina.

It will be interesting to see if they prefer this or Tom Hooper’s Les Mis…

I think Aaron Johnson looks kind of a mess (why not have Matthew McFayden play that character?) but this trailer is really good. Knightley looks like she will be in contention, and Jude Law is very affecting. Might he be in the running for Supporting Actor?
LOVE the blending of outside action and the theater setting. Theater being a place of high drama, so it’s kind of inspired that they’re going to set most of the action there.
The dance sequences in the trailer remind me of the party scenes in Pride and Prejudice. Wright and his cinematographers always manage to create really great visual choreography with their camera work so I’m very intrigued as to what they have in store.

Not really feeling the poster but the trailer is fantastic. Hopefully it’s not a case of style over substance, and the storytelling can match those incredible visuals!

It looks good, but now I can’t help wishing Joe Wright had tackled The Great Gatsby…

Looks very promising, especially in the technical categories as well as Ms. Knightley.

I really need to see this trailer in a theater; the video/sound quality didn’t help, but this just felt like one of those multinational productions from the late 90s that Miramax would’ve released. Aaron Johnson doesn’t look too good, no, but aside from Jude Law, I’m not too impressed. I think Keira Knightley was JUST not quite the right choice for Anna.

Well it’s a beautiful trailer, I know that much. Story doesn’t interest me much but I am now intrigued.

Looks stunning. Almost too much in the trailer. Looking forward to this one.
