Back in June word began spilling out about the major troubles that the adaptation of ‘World War Z’ were going through, namely the need for massive reshoots and a new ending, along with confrontations between Brad Pitt and director Marc Forster and a rumor that DP Robert Richardson had tried to quit the project. The stories had Damon Lindelof rewriting the third act, and while that’s true, now Deadline is reporting here that Drew Goddard is actually the man mostly responsible for the new ending (they also mention that Christopher McQuarrie could be next in line as well). I certainly prefer Goddard, especially after ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, but frankly I just want this flick to get saved somehow. After the jump you can see the details, but cross your fingers that these guys can still make this another Brad Pitt film worth seeing…

When I was a kid, I loved ‘Independence Day’. Now…not so much. It’s silly and has a nostalgic quality to it, but I don’t consider it to be an especially “good” movie anymore. Well, godfathers of the film Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are banking on my opinion being in the minority, since according to The Hollywood Reporter (here) they’re ready to make a sequel. After the jump you can see what else they have planned, but really folks…do any of you actually want to see this? Am I wrong? Well, either way check out what other project of theirs they want to revisit (and no, it’s not ‘Godzilla’) below…you probably won’t be surprised.

Channing Tatum has done his part to change my opinion of him this year. He hit a new low for me with ‘The Vow’ back in February, but a month later he surprised me with his comic aptitude in ’21 Jump Street’. Finally, last month Tatum had what I might call his career high point with ‘Magic Mike’. Of course, he now has even more options in terms of the next step in his acting, and according to The Hollywood Reporter here, 2 of the projects are going to be a sequel to ‘Magic Mike’ and also a biopic of the stunt man Evel Knievel. After the jump you can see the details of these ventures, but I certainly think both (especially if the sequel isn’t just a quick cash grab, which Tatum’s involvement suggests it won’t be) have potential…

One day, Tobey Maguire will be an Oscar nominee. He made a strong play for a nod a few years ago with ‘Brothers’, and while he doesn’t always pick projects that properly utilize his skill set, he does however often work with interesting filmmakers. The Playlist is reporting here that he’s adding Jason Reitman to that list, taking on a small role for the director’s next film ‘Labor Day’. The story also says that he won’t be in Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’ though, so you win some, you lose some. After the jump you can see who he’s playing in the flick, but I do like the direction his career is going. Read on below for more on Maguire’s role in Reitman’s film…

Hey everyone! Terence here, reporting on a pretty calm end to my time at Comic-Con, mostly due to the INSANE line to get into Hall H. I got to get some much needed rest after yesterday’s marathon Hall H day before heading to the Hilton Bayfront to do some interviews with members of the Art Directors Guild. I really enjoyed talking with them about their experiences working on movies and TV shows. Film and TV, being visual mediums, require great imagination and skill to bring forth the written words on the page and I definitely got a sense of the work required to bring that to life. After interviewing these great designers, I tried to see about getting into some panels but everywhere I turned there was a long line, so I decided to head back to my room and get a few things in order.

- Another week at the The Awards Circuit, and our 30 Days of Batman series is still going strong! We began with Joey Magidson’s reminiscence of “Christopher Nolan’s Journey With Batman” followed by Daniel Ashtiany’s water cooler speculation about the “2015 Batman Reboot.” As long as nobody related to the Twilight franchise is involved, I’ll be game for whoever becomes a part of this future endeavor. Whether Batman’s next journey is complete crap, I’ll always have Nolan’s films to smile upon, and no crapfest will ever diminish the fine contribution Nolan made to the origins of our favorite Caped Crusader. Robert continued the series with his article, “Batman Below-the-Line” (Close your eyes kids — things are going to get a bit NC-17 for this one!), that gives multiple shout-outs to many of the crew that created the memorable visuals and cinematic beauty of the Batman films. It’s always nice to acknowledge the little guys, especially if what they’re giving us is anything but miniscule. I then took thinks back to the glorious 60s where we witnessed the first important player in a Batman live-action world, Mr. Adam West with his Batman: The TV Series show. Sure, it was cheesy and slightly offensive to all comic book lovers everywhere, but at least it’s gotten us to this great point in the Batman film-verse, and for that who can ever be resentful? Jumping ahead 30 years, still in the past, I switched gears and provided a historical review of one of animation’s greatest television programs, Batman: The Animated Series. Do yourself a favor — go watch this show and then tell me it’s not quintessential Batman. I dare you! Finally, Joey gave us an in-depth look at the actor behind Bane himself, Mr. Tom Hardy. I’ll admit to not really responding to Inception’s Eames as much as everyone else apparently did (but to be fair, I didn’t respond very favorably to that film either), but even I cannot deny what a terrific actor Hardy is in films like Warrior and Bronson. He’s a menace on-screen, bringing a ferocity that’s rare in Hollywood’s string of “nice and pretty” performances. Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 7/15)…

I can recall the great times of Rob Reiner. Taking on important, stylishly intelligent films like A Few Good Men (1992) or capturing the heart of innocence in Stand by Me (1986), Reiner was and probably still is a very capable director. Unfortunately in his newest effort, The Magic of Belle Isle, Reiner saddles down a road of melodrama and predictability and plateaus on the land of contrary and bland nature.
