Up until today, the biggest news in relation to ‘The Master’ was the recent news that Paul Thomas Anderson’s flick had received an R rating from the MPAA. Now, we can also add a brand new trailer to the mix. It shows a lot of new footage, features some absolutely gorgeous cinematography, gets even further into the similarities that the religion/cult in question shares with Scientology, and overall does nothing to take away from the notion that this PTA flick is going to be a big Oscar contender. You can see the trailer after the jump and decide on its awards prospects in that ay, but I certainly like what I see here, in case you were wondering. Don’t take my word for it though, since you can see for yourself. Check it out below…

It looks beautiful, I’ll say that…

Great trailer. But, is Phoenix really going to be a “supporting” actor, or just shoehorned into the category? If he is ran as lead, are we all going to just drop him from our predictions like we did Julianne Moore in 2010?

No, here is my prediction, he will go lead. Him and Hoffman will share lead. Similar scenarios like this happen often, All about Eve for example. Now if he can win with that situation is another story. He would be a for sure win supporting, however by going lead he could split with Hoffman very easily. He would be an admirable competition for Day-Lewis as well.
This film looks like a BP contender. I got Platoon vibes from all over this. Also would not be surprised by a Paul Thomas Anderson serious Oscar talk. After Nolan he is one of those directors that is in line to get one.

Koook- He’s going lead, if I had to put money on it.

GL- I’d expect Hoffman to go Supporting, but a lot can still change…

Am I going to have to go back and eat crow from my original Awards Profile of this film? I hope so…

This is intriguing…I’m curious to see how it relates to Scientology or if it’s just a generalized cult sort of thing.

Another one I hope, I hope, I hope is at TIFF — will know next week in the first series of announcements — cannot wait for the festival this year.

I’m thinking my own personal awards for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Actor, and Original Score are accounted for.

Lead or Supporting, I think Phoenix is going to win either way. He looks absolutely incredible.
The question for me isn’t will The Master be a BP nominee, the question is will/can it win?

Robert- I think so…

Jessie- Same here.

John- Duly noted.

Mark- He looks terrific, but I won’t presume a win just yet…

I mean…the score is unbelievably gorgeous.

Lincoln’s going to have to have an amazing trailer for me to put it ahead of this one. If Hoffman wants a serious shot at winning another Oscar I think he’ll go supporting. And as for the comment about PTA being behind Nolan in line for an Oscar…I’d think Nolan’s at least a few places behind PTA. Nolan needs to be taken seriously first.

I have a feeling that this is gonna be one of the weirdest films ever made.

I do believe it was confirmed the other day (read this over at In Contention) that Phoenix will be lead, and Hoffman will be supporting.
