The reaction to this terrible event troubles me too. Linking a fictional character to a rampage killing is weird and wrong. Everyone wants to jump in to “help.” It reminds me of the huge contributions to the firefighters after 9-11. The motivation is noble, but are we just trying to alleviate our own relief that it wasn’t us who suffered?

Who has really examined why this happened? Is there any solution? Maybe not. Peter Bogdanovich puts in his 2 cents and that is all it is worth—2 cents. Has there been any reliable studies linking violence in the media with actual violence? If so then we need to take it into consideration. If not, let’s focus on mental health services for the high risk population for these kinds of crimes. The US is not the only country experiencing the horrible effects of rampage killings. Remember what happened in Norway.
