The Weinstein Company moves up the release date of ‘The Master’ to September!

They've also pushed back 'Killing Them Softly'...

Yes, believe it or not…you won’t have to wait much too much longer to see Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film ‘The Master’. Originally scheduled to hit theaters during the middle of October, Variety is reporting here that The Weinstein Company now has the film opening in limited release on September 14th, with a theater expansion planned the next weekend. This is obviously exciting news, but it does come with a little caveat in that we won’t be seeing Andrew Dominik’s film ‘Killing Them Softly’ until later than expected. Hit the jump for details on when you can see that movie, but it’s nothing too bad, I assure you. You can see the date below for ‘Killing Them Softly’, and be sure to mark your calendars for ‘The Master’…

Dominik’s film didn’t get a huge change, just a move back towards where PTA’s flick originally was. The shift leaves it with a still very solid October 19th date (the same one as the previous time for ‘The Master’). I’m not sure if it’s a limited or wide release, but it’s a good one nonetheless. ‘Killing Them Softly’ looks to be a winner too, so it could be a real good year for Harvey Weinstein.

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 200 and 300 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Internet Film Critics Association as well. Today the IFCA, tomorrow the world!

Normally I regard September releases dubiously…but I think TWC is making a very clever move by releasing it at a time when there won’t be much competition.

And of course, the sooner I get to see it, the better.

It’s an interesting move, potentially bold — does it mean the film is an astonishing work and they have absolute confidence in it OR could it mean they are not as hopeful as they once were for Oscar glory — never forget The Weinstein Company or formerly Miramax are all about Oscar nominations, wins and money, and not necessarily in that order — Harvey knows that with Oscar attention comes money — this is the first time I have been worried about The Master, though admittedly I cannot wait to see the film. You can never under estimate Harevy Weinstein, he may have found a new way to play the Oscar game and is about to revolutionize…again.

Let’s not forget that last year we had a September release in the Oscar race (Moneyball) and that two of the best (IMO) films of last year were also September releases (Drive and 50/50).
