It’s time to visit the week that was via our Around the Circuit piece, where we look back at articles that we feel are worth your time covering the Oscar race, new releases, or really just anything film related.

    Link of the week:

In Contention’s Guy Lodge bemoans the lack of Original Screenplays in the mix each year, regardless of the last three Best Picture winners all being considered original by AMPAS’ standards. The lack of depth in the Original Screenplay field is astonishing, and Guy points the finger at studios which prefer taking on low risks – such as sequels, re-adaptations, and spin-offs - to suit an audience that pays out to see familiarity over contemporary. However, Guy also sees the silver lining on the issue by pointing out that films like A Separation and Bridesmaids wouldn’t have the opportunity to be nominated at all if the category was more saturated by Oscar-friendly scripts. He goes on to give an early look at what films might be in the hunt for a nominee in this field.

Also over at In Contention, Kris Tapley assesses the festival lineup so far, wondering what will play at Telluride, speculating at a title or two in the process.

Following John’s Historical Circuit on Deliverance, Oliver Lyttelton over at The Playlist celebrates the film’s 40th anniversary by providing us with five little facts about the film that you might not have known.

Anne Thompson at Thompson on Hollywood brought one of my favorite films of the year (so far) some attention: Kirby Dick’s emotionally powerful documentary, The Invisible War. Hopefully Oscar voters give the film a chance and draw even more attention to this tragic epidemic taking place behind the scenes in our armed forces. I had the privilege of seeing the film last spring at the Cleveland International Film Festival, you can read my thoughts on it here.

Yahoo Movie Talks’ Mike Krumboltz takes a look at Alfred Hitchcock and his obsession with his blond leading ladies, including Tippi Hedren (The Birds, Marnie) who holds nothing back on her feelings toward the legendary filmmaker. Hedren was part of a panel to discuss HBO’s upcoming movie, The Girl, starring Sienna Miller as Hedren and Toby Jones as Hitch.

    About Mark Johnson

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Lost, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.
