George Clooney has always been a leading man, yet his only Oscar win was for Supporting Actor for "Syriana". Granted, that was to symbolically honor him for that film and "Good Night and Good Luck", but an Oscar win is an Oscar win. Just because DiCaprio is a leading man most of the time doesn't mean the thought of him winning a supporting award will be upsetting to Academy members.

I have a feeling that if "Amadeus" were released today, Abraham would be campaigned for lead and Hulce would be for supporting. The Oscar race has changed over the years, and for some reason, as Terrence said, people don't like the idea of two people of the same gender being nominated for lead. And when you particularly talk about someone like Weinstein, I just don't see him going for the riskier "co-lead" decision.
