File this one as a definite long shot, but it seems that Warner Brothers is trying to sit down with Ben Affleck to convince him to take the reigns for their gestating ‘Justice League’ film. Variety is reporting here that the studio has him at the top of their list now that Christopher Nolan has made it abundantly clear that he’ll have nothing to do with this movie. The flick has a script written by ‘Gangster Squad’ scribe Will Beal and WB has a strong relationship with Affleck so this does make a bit of sense. I’d personally love for it to happen, but I have my doubts. Affleck seems interested in a slightly different sort of film at the moment, though who knows, as the studio sought him out for their Superman reboot as well. After the jump you can see a few details of this story, but take it with a grain of salt for now. One can dream, of course. Read on below for more…
Here’s a bit of the article:
With Christopher Nolan declaring himself out of the running for JUSTICE LEAGUE, Warner Bros. has approached another of its go-to directors in Ben Affleck, who’s expected to discuss the project with studio brass in the coming days, multiple sources tell Variety’s Jeff Sneider and Justin Kroll. Since guiding WB’s THE TOWN to commercial success and critical acclaim from both sides of the camera, Affleck has ascended high on the studio’s list of filmmakers who can be trusted with prime properties. Thus far, Affleck is the only candidate who’s been sent Will Beall’s JUSTICE LEAGUE script, which the GANGSTER SQUAD scribe was hired to write last summer. DC Comics’ answer to Marvel’s Avengers, JUSTICE LEAGUE is expected to bring together marquee characters Batman and Superman, as well as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash.

Oh I hope not — he is so fine a director now with his dark, brooding films — why go in a direction so different only because they want him to do so??? With Gone Baby Gone and The Town he has established himself as one of the more promising American filmmakers and there is no reason to think Argo will be any less than his previous work — why go backwards???

I’m not sure it’s a true step backwards, and it does somewhat fit in with his interest in a large scale project to tackle (i.e. The Stand). Still, I don’t expect him to actually accept…

The Stand is going to be a huge project that will eat up Affleck’s schedule and pretty much kill this prospect. I’m certain of it.

Very true, if any movement on The Stand actually takes place…

Ben Affleck making this would definitely make me want to see it.

You’re certainly not alone there…
