If there's a fear I have for "Lincoln", it's that it could play it far too safe, fail to dig into Lincoln's complexities, and end up as a hagiography or a dry history lesson. I don't think that's necessarily likely, but it's something that worries me nonetheless.

I also have high hopes for this one. Even disregarding its lack in quality, "War Horse" was doomed from the start because it really wasn't a film anybody wanted. Even Spielberg took it as a way to fill his time during post-production during Tintin. I feel that "Lincoln" isn't a movie that people are rooting to fail: it has a lot of elements in it that are appealing and this could be one of those heavy Oscar contenders that end up being as great as it says it wants to be. I'm certainly hoping that it will.

I think this could be a resurgence for Spielberg. I don't think he's made a real Spielberg-tier film in a decade (2002 saw Catch Me If You Can and Minority Report, both good credits to his body of work) but I think he can pull ahead here. There's simply nothing to suggest this film will be anything less than quality. I mentioned before that I think the studio is playing this one really smart by saving the promotional materials for a short period right before the release, making sure the hype can't die down once it hits in full force.

Although I found the tedious "War Horse" as a self-absorbed melodrama, I have high hopes for Speilberg's new film. Mostly because of the casting and story.
