Another Trailer released for “The Master”

Is the film positioned for a place with Oscar?

Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is gearing up to released later next month and with the recent announcement that it will have a screening at TIFF, this could be the beginning of a critical darling sweep.  Early word is that Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman are incredible but the narrative is a struggle for some.  Sasha Stone from Awards Daily said on our recent podcast that many say “it has no plot.”  It’s hard for Oscar to get enthused about something when they don’t get it.  We’ll have to see but The Weinstein Company have convinced voters that Chocolat, Shakespeare in Love, and The Reader were worth a place on a Best Picture lineup.  Hence, this should be an easy get.

Check out the newest trailer.

God, I’m already obsessed with this movie. I think you are right about it having a good chance to be this year’s critical darling, but I’m thinking less and less on its odds of actually winning Best Picture. We haven’t seen a trailer for Lincoln, but that just screams Oscar. More their cup of tea, on paper at least. I can’t wait for the Fall.

Is Phoenix not happy about Hoffman being in love with Adams? He seems unable to even look at Hoffman as he talks about being in love. Or do you think Phoenix is just unhappy that others around him are happy in love while he is unable to be with the girl who “wrote me a letter?”
