    1. Screenplay prizes are either part of a Best Picture sweep or a consolation prize. For instance, last year, “Midnight in Paris” and “The Descendants” weren’t going to win Best Picture, so their screenplay awards were a way to reward them. “The Master” definitely seems like a film that could go that route, where it doesn’t win in a lot of categories but they want to show appreciation for it in at least one major category, and screenplay is the way to do it.

      I don’t think the screenplay nomination for “Magic Mike” is likely, but it is possible. Best Original Screenplay is a funky category sometimes. Last year both “Bridesmaids” and “Margin Call” made it in (I know those films have supporters, but neither screenplay was of nomination quality to me).

    5. Interesting podcast. I too think ‘Magic Mike’s’ best chance at a nom is in the “original screenplay” category. It’s a reward for exceeding their 7 million budget over $100 million, plus the critical love is there. As for director, I have to go with Thomas McCarthy. He was snubbed for his ‘Win Win’ screenplay last Oscars, and he’s made three incredible indie films (plus co-write a terrific script for Pixar’s ‘Up’), all very different, but all having very real characters who we connect with instantly. I know the guy is going to get his Oscar nom one day in the DIRECTING field, and I do hope it’s soon! But yes, I’m right alongside everyone on the Todd Field love train.
