Terence:  Alright Joseph we’re back this week to talk about the comedy nominees.

Joseph:  Hey Terence, hey everyone. Holy moly, this list reminded me that Melissa McCarthy is being nominated again. Did someone at the Emmy committee not get the memo that she’s already been nominated for an Oscar?

Terence:  Ha! The snark is already starting. Since you’re already in Snarkelstiltskin mode, let’s discuss these supporting actress nominees cause oof it’s a rough category.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Kathryn Joosten, Desperate Housewives
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live

Joseph:  This list is pretty god-awful. No Gillian Jacobs or Allison Brie for Community? That’s utterly preposterous. Those are two of the funniest gals on television.

Terence:  Let me just say that I had the PERFECT quip about how Betty White like Melissa was getting too much love and then I remembered she wasn’t nominated! (small victories?)

Joseph:  Oh Terence, she is nominated in a much worse deserving category, but that will be for another session. I’m rooting for Merrit Wever, and I don’t care if anyone hates me for it, but that girl has real talent, especially compared to this lineup. Actually, I wouldn’t mind a Sofia Vergara win either.

Terence:  I’m fully on Team Vergara for this, however this is looking like Julie Bowen Emmy win #2.

Joseph:  Julie Bowen doesn’t make me laugh, plain and simple. She’s a good actress, but she’s not funny. More like frantic and annoying. This could be Vergara’s year, but we all know how the Emmy treated Eva Longoria for Desperate Housewives, another Latin American female actress who was just as good if not better than her cohorts. I’m not placing all my bets on Vergara, but I am optimistic.

Terence:  I just think the Emmy voters will attribute Vergara’s laughs as solely being a product of her accent, when her comedic timing and acting ability are actually pretty great.

Joseph:  That’s a depressing thought. Joosten and Wiig both have the potential to win as well. I’m just not sure where the Emmy’s heads at right now.

Terence:  Yeah they’re strange beasts those Emmy voters. Anyways let’s move away from the wasteland of supporting actress and discuss supporting actor. You know I love the Modern Family gang, but do ALL the principle adults have to be nominated?

Ty Burrell, Modern Family

Max Greenfield, New Girl
Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live

Joseph:  I don’t think so. I was out of the loop with Glee this year, so I’m not sure how well Chris Colfer was, but he’s usually always Emmy worthy, so I’m surprised with his snub.

Terence:  If you’d watched this season of Glee you’d have known that show wasn’t sniffing any big time nominations. Colfer just didn’t have good enough material to edge out people who were actually doing comedic work

Joseph:  Jesse Tyler Ferguson is one we can count out as winning. It’ll be Ed or Eric, I believe. I wouldn’t be totally shocked if they went out of left field and gave it to Max Greenfield, just because he is a surprise and will likely not be nominated again, and probably deserves a win. Maybe Burrell, but already won last year.

Terence:  Max Greenfield is far and away the deserving winner of this category and I’d wager that he’s as much of the draw to New Girl as Zooey. But Joseph, did you know that Ed O’Neill hasn’t won a single Emmy in his entire career???? Might this be his best shot? Stonestreet and Burrell have already won, Hader won’t win and this is Max’s first time…

Joseph:  I’d give it to Eric, just because (now don’t hate me Modern Family fans, because I love the show too) he seems to be one of the only people on the show who actually play a completely different character and personality than he actually is. I’ve seen many interviews and awards shows with many of the Modern Family actors, and they do act like how they behave on the show. Sorry, but it’s true. Therefore, I’m rooting for Max or Eric. And if Eric does win, I’ll pretend it’s for his PHENOMENAL guest role in American Horror Story. “Piggy Piggy” for life!

Terence:  I guess the one thing we can be thankful for is that Jon Cryer won’t steal another Emmy from a supporting actor we like…but unfortunately he’s now in the lead category, stealing spots from the likes of Joel McHale and Johnny Galecki.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Louis CK, Louie
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Joseph:  Yes…maybe the Emmys are awarding Jon Cryer for being the anti-Charlie Sheen. Joel McHale so deserved the Emmy nod, at least once for goodness sake!

Terence:  I just don’t get the love for Cryer. At. All. But with Baldwin and Parsons, there’s no way he’ll win.

Joseph:  If Baldwin or Cryer win, I won’t be surprised but I’ll be fuming mad. Parsons doesn’t need to win again either. Give it to newcomer Louie or the amazing vet, Larry David.

Terence:  I’m so tired of Larry David and that show…and it would be a riot to see Louie win, but I think Parsons is the new Tony Shalloub, winning every award in sight and it won’t stop till he leaves.

Joseph:  I’m not tired of it, because he’s NEVER WON and neither has the show even though it has the best writing for a comedy on television, and Larry David always makes me laugh even when he’s being infuriating. Now we get how big The Big Bang Theory has gotten and Jim Parsons has received enough accolades, so give it up to someone else more worthy/deserving.

Terence:  Monk was a big hit as well and that didn’t stop them from showering Tony Shalloub with awards. It’s Parsons to lose. Remember Parsons won Emmys in the same years that Steve Carrel left The Office and Tony Shalloub left Monk, both were the front runners. Plus Parsons always gives good speech.

Joseph:  I’d hate to think that, but you’re probably right.

Terence:  Referencing things you might dislike, let’s talk about McCarthy and her fellow lead actress nominees.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Zoey Deschanel, New Girl
Lena Dunham, Girls
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Joseph:  I really wish Melissa McPoopyPants was replaced by Gillian Jacobs from Community, and I would argue that’s not category fraud. I’m rooting for Lena Dunham on this one, mostly because her performance feels the most authentic and real of the entire roster.

Terence:  Here’s the issue with the nominees: on the surface these nominees aren’t that bad. There’s a good mix of strictly comedic work and dramedy, respected and newbie actresses, and both broadcast and premium cable choices. However, taking a closer look and they were predictable since the start of the season, save for Dunham. It’s heartbreaking the spell Edie Falco and McCarthy have cast on them. They are the Mariska Hargitay and Kathy Bates of the comedy category.

Joseph:  The issue is there’s nothing all that fresh about it. Lena and Zooey are the only “new” ones, but we’ve known for awhile that Zooey Deschanel would eventually get nominated for something. She’s seemed that way since 500 Days of Summer,’so it feels like she’s been a nominee forever, haha.

Terence:  The big question is where are Laura Dern and Martha Plimpton?

Joseph: I have not seen Laura Dern in Enlightened, so that’s up in the air for me, as I know she’s one of those actresses who is either great in the right roles or truly horrific.

Terence:  I mean Dern won the Globe, I’m shocked Dunham managed to make it in over here

Joseph:  I just think Enlightened is perhaps the most invisible show on television right now, so a snub doesn’t surprise me all that much, even with the Globe win.

Terence:  It’s not invisible if the Hollywood Foreign Press can manage to vote for it lol

Joseph:  They can vote for anything so long as it has a reasonably well known star attached to it.

Terence:  It’s interesting that they didn’t go for Dern but Dunham when you consider how abrasive both characters are.

Joseph:  But Dunham is the rising star on a show that could still be potentially canceled, and we may not hear from her again or see her nominated in a long time. Emmy likes to strike while the iron is hot. Dern is going to be in many things in the future, even if Enlightened gets canceled after a second season. She is a daughter of Hollywood.

Terence:  Speaking of striking a hot iron, HBO sure did with its comedies. Veep, Curb Your Enthusiam, and Girls all made it into best comedy.

Joseph:  I refuse to discuss this category! No Community! Next…

Terence: O_O

Joseph: I’m just kidding, but really it irks me how comfortable the Emmys are with repeat nominees that are slowing down and getting rather stale, i.e. 30 Rock. Also…Veep? I did not see that coming. I really thought Louie or New Girl would have had better odds.It seems like HBO overload.

Terence:  Well I’d be content if Curb and 30 Rock faded away from Emmy contention (and off my TV forever). The Community snub is not surprising. But you’re right about Veep, I thought for sure New Girl would take that final slot. But I am sooooooooooooo happy (enough emphasis?) for Girls getting in.

Joseph:  Me too, that’s pretty much the best surprise of the Emmys. The whole Girls love, which by the way I totally knew would happen but am still thrilled knowing it did. The critics really helped on this one, so let’s pat ourselves on the back

Terence:  Well since you have a crystal ball, do you think it has a shot at the win? Modern Family is gonna be so easy for voters to check again cause it’s consistently funny. Girls is so “realistic” that they might recoil out of fear/shame for our generation.

Joseph:  Modern Family is marathon running away with this. It has zero competition.

Terence:  Yeah I agree. So give the good people your winners so they can start buying kleenex for losses accurately predict the winners in their Emmy pool.

Joseph:  Oh god…do I have to? Thank you Terence for getting this dreadful category out of the way so early:

Bet Supporting Actor: Max Greenfield, New Girl (Aaron Paul/Archie Panjabi-esque shocker?)

Terence:  Ugh these nominees are so predictable that even though I really want to be different, our picks will look similar:

Actor: Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
Actress: Zooey Deschanel, New Girl
S. Actor: Max Greenfield, New Girl, in an upset that will keep poor Ed O’Neill Emmyless yet again
S. Actress: Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Best Comedy: Modern Family
