I’ve been looking forward to Derek Cianfrance’s follow-up to ‘Blue Valentine’ since the moment I learned about it, and while not everyone fell for ‘The Place Beyond the Pines‘ a few days ago following its Toronto début, the reviews seem to indicate a high quality motion picture. That of course led to a frenzy to try and purchase the film, with The Weinstein Company initially in the lead. However, it seems that Focus Features has come out on top, beating Harvey and gaining distribution rights for the flick. After the jump you can see what I think will happen to the movie, in terms of its awards prospects and whether it’ll wind up a 2012 or a 2013 release date, but either way I’m still just as interested in seeing it as ever. Read on below for more…
When you see my next updated Oscar predictions, I’ll be dropping ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ from everything…not because of quality, but because I expect it to be a contender next year instead. It would probably benefit the film to come out next year, since the male acting categories are a bit crowded in 2012 and if co-star Bradley Cooper winds up with a nod this year for ‘The Silver Linings Playbook’ it would only help things here (the same goes for Dane DeHaan possibly being a bigger star this year, as he’s said to be terrific here). Ironically, it would lead to all three of Ryan Gosling’s initial 2012 releases (‘Gangster Squad’, ‘Only God Forgives’, and ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’) being likely 2013 releases. Go figure there. Regardless, this could be a real contender…we just might have to wait a year.

Any Gosling movie has me interested, but this one just sounds like it has the potential to wow me…we’ll see when it comes out.

I think “Best Picture” may be a long shot for 2012, but if ‘Place Beyond The Pines’ was released this year, I could see Ryan Gosling possibly nabbing a Best Supporting Actor nom. And Jackman and Murray would have to disappoint for Cooper to get an acting nod, but it’s definitely possible. Right now, he’s bubbling at #6 for me for ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’ If ‘Place Beyond the Pines’ does release next year alongside the other two Gosling projects you mentioned, 2013 is shaping up to be a terrific year for cinema.

Indeed, it’s a contender in either year, just to what extent…

Looks like 2013 will be our Very Gosling Year instead of 2012… disappointing, I suppose, but I’d rather have one Very Gosling Year instead of two years of moderate Gosling, if only because it’s more fun that way.

No argument there…

The rumblings on twitter suggested the film would be hard to market. Could this be the reason why Weistein backed off? And does this mean that we have another “Blue Valentine”/”Drive” coming our way?

It’s possible, but I suspect it just came down to numbers…

Sexiest man alive vs the second sexiest man alive, at least according to People Magazine.
