The second trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has arrived! This will be the first in what will be a trilogy of Hobbit films spanning the next three years. An Unexpected Journey will be in theatres on December 14th of this year, followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013 and The Hobbit: There And Back Again on July 18, 2014.

The new trailer looks as majestic as one would expect – being that we have the same filmmakers that brought us the incredible Lord of the Rings trilogy – and delivers a much lighter tone than the first trailer we saw. I’m pretty sure I’m still the only one out there predicting it for a Best Picture nom, but I’d bet there will be many predicting The Hobbit for the tech/craft awards like Visual Effects and Sound.

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Are you excited to return to Middle Earth? What do you think of The Hobbit’s Oscar hopes?

    About Mark Johnson

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Lost, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.

    1. I loved the trailer. I think it plays really well with the epicness that the story actually is. However, in terms of Oscar, the story is very light and less adult friendly in comparison to the original trilogy. I don’t have any doubts the film will be a major player in the VFX, Cinematography, Production Design, Make-up & Hair, Costume, and maybe Editing. But anything else seems a little bit of a hill climb for them. Looks good though.

    2. I’m actually impressed by how much Jackson seems to be working to differentiate these films from LOTR. It feels more like I remember The Hobbit feeling, as opposed to the air of great importance that was omnipresent in the LOTR movies.

Though I would still prefer del Toro’s version.

    3. Aside from the horrible editing, I actually liked the footage shown. The visual effects look good and the footage was impressive. I’m still not sold that it will be a big Oscar player considering the “been there, done that” feel the movie might have but it looks like a fun flick.
