Fox Searchlight has announced a November 23rd release date for The Sacha Gervasi-directed film, Hitchcock, starring Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins in the titular role. Hitchcock is adapted by John J. McLaughlin from Stephen Rebello’s book Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho. Along with Hopkins stars Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Kurtwood Smith.
Have a look at the poster after the jump…
Expect Hopkins to make a push in what is an already crowded Lead Actor race and perhaps Helen Mirren - who plays Hitch’s wife, Alma Reville (it would always be a mistake to discount Mirren’s chances) for Lead Actress. I’m not too certain about its award chances in anything else (other than makeup, perhaps), but I have to say I’m intrigued to see how this late entry plays out.

The good news: He looks more like Anthony Hopkins now.
The bad news: He looks nothing like Hitchcock.
He may be able to pull off the voice and mannerisms (it’s Hopkins, after all), but I’d have a hard time overcoming how little he looks like Hitch, and how much he looks like a wax statue.

That poster gives the film a very different vibe from what I was expecting. Interesting.

So that little rumor turned out to be true. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but at this point I can’t see it making a huge impact. The major contenders have already been established, and barring some major disappointments, I can’t fathom how this can really enter the race outside a few techs. I’m still anxious to see the movie though.

This is likely a sign that they’re not as confident in Beasts of the Southern Wild or The Sessions making a play for a Best Picture nod, so this makes more sense than I originally thought, especially if the test screenings are to be believed…
