Of the currently perceived contenders for Best Picture, I'm probably most on the fence about this one; it does look very nice, but I find myself uncompelled by the story. I'm reminded heavily of The Black Stallion (a great film that deserves to be better remembered)--the shipwreck scenes in particular seem very close to that film indeed.

It just seems, from the trailer at least, that this is a lushly made film without a firm core. I could be wrong (I should note I've never read the book), but I'm definitely anxious to see what the reviews will be like.
