That is pretty much my thinking on Les Mis. If it is the hit everything seems to be indicating, you just can’t exclude the actor who will be carrying the whole show from literally the first frame to the last and most of the images in between. Everyone else in the whole story revolves around JVJ. Unless there is some major screw up, this is a case of the man/actor meeting the material and if that isn’t enough for an Oscar, I don’t know what it.

I think if Les Miserables is the big player that I’m expecting, it’s foolish to think Jackman won’t be nominated. I mean, Valjean IS the movie. Based on the trailers, it doesn’t seem like it will be a flop… then again, you never know.

I just really want him to get a nom.

Well, Phoenix is 100% getting nominated, so that’s kind of taken care of anyway.

There actually haven’t been any reviews of Lincoln, so there’s nothing to go on…tonight’s NYFF screening of it is the first actual look. Test screenings in malls don’t count.

We shall see what happens…

Actually having a problem with this category since as of now there are only two I would back wholeheartedly and I’m working from trailers – namely Hawkes and Jackman. Since I didn’t like The Master and I’m not particularly a Phoenix fan anyway, scratch that one. For me DDL climbs over the top way too often in just about everything and reviews on Lincoln have been anything but stellar. Argo and Flight look like exciting and well made but somewhat standard genre fare so it is wait and see for Affleck and Washington, both of whom are favorite actors, but I want to see them in the context of the films to judge performance.
