For quite a while now, I’ve been toying with the idea of sneaking Studio Ghibli/GKIDS’ From Up On Poppy Hill into my Best Animated Feature Oscar predictions. Today’s news might give people who also have the film on the fringe of their predictions the needed boost to include the film in their five. From Up On Poppy Hill has been nominated for 2012 Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Animated Feature.

Studio Ghibli – who brought us such animated classics as Spirited Away, Ponyo, and The Secret World of Arrietty – and GKIDS – who was responsible for three Animated Feature nominees over the past three years, including both Chico and Rita and A Cat in Paris last year brings us From Up On Poppy Hill, directed by Goro Miyazaki from a screenplay by Academy Award winner Hayao Miyazaki. The film was the top-grossing Japanese film of 2011 and won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation.

The winner of the 2012 Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Animated Feature will be announced on November 23rd.

    About Mark Johnson

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Lost, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.
