The Awards Circuit Power Hour returns twelve hours earlier before Hurricane Sandy plows through the East Coast. Just in case my internet and electricity go out, you’ll have our episode down in the books. The staff and I discuss the following things on this week’s episode.
- The reception to Cloud Atlas. Is it an Oscar contender? What are some of the feelings swirling around the web about this ambitious feature? Is there room in the race for newcomers Doona Bae and Ben Whishaw?
- Ballots for the International Press Academy’s Satellite Awards went out this past week. Without seeing the big, end of the year favorites, is the award show telling of anything at all?
- With such poor discipline as critics, we discuss the Documentary Feature race and which films could emerge on top. Could an early year favorite and high-profile film like Bully make the final cut with the Weinsteins backing?
- We attempt to break down nearly every category.
- Of course, we take a bunch of YOUR questions as well.

I, for one, don’t believe that the Academy will give Jessica Chastain the Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty. Why? Because we’ve already seen actresses play this role many times. For example, Noami Watts in Fair Game and Claire Danes in Homeland Security, which by the way is huge right now. But who knows? I also wouldn’t count Jennifer Lawrence out of the game. She has a lot of powerful people behind her. Mainly, Harvey Weinstein campaigning for her. She has the Hunger Games producers pushing her for the BA nomination and a dior campaign coming up. It’s pretty hard to predict who’s going to win the BA award at this point.

Great podcast guys!
I’m a huge fan of Peter Jackson’s LOTR trilogy so I have high hopes for An Unexpected Journey, but I totally understand the hesitation to include it much in your predictions. Obviously you guys have way more experience in this field but I have a feeling that the film is going to be better than anyone expects it to be and will be good enough to be nominated for BP and most of the tech awards.
Do you feel that the Academy is done with Peter Jackson and Middle-Earth for now after showering Return of the King with Oscars? Or is it the 48fps angle that concerns you?
Also, if the members of the Academy are smart they’ll nominate (and hopefully give the award to) Adele for Skyfall. Having her perform it at the ceremony would be a huge boost in publicity and relevance.

I think it very much is the been there, done that feeling that will keep the Academy from giving it a lot of Oscar noms. Phantom Menace might be the best approximation of what the Academy will do for the 2nd set of trilogy films. That film got a few technical noms but was never a serious threat.
I personally think that the 48 fps stuff would be the deal breaker if that was the only way it was being projected. They can always chicken out and use 24…but if 48 fps is a hit then watch out

Well I mean if we assume The Hobbit will be of some quality then the comparison to The Phantom Menace isn’t exactly apt.

I’m not counting Wallis out of the game yet – I’m still certain she’ll be nominated, though she’ll probably not win. I suspect she’ll re-enter the conversation in a big way once precursors start.

“Side by Side” and “How to Survive a Plague” were two documentaries I saw earlier in the year, and the former is a really excellent film. I don’t know what it’s chances are to get nominated, especially since it’s about filmmaking and may not seem “important” enough, but I really enjoyed it. That one will probably end up on my top ten list. As for the other, it chronicles the activist fight against AIDS, and while it’s good, I feel there’s better docs out there on that subject matter.
PTA and “The Master” getting nominated would seem similar to Malick getting nominated last year for “The Tree of Life”, as well as the film itself. I think there’s a hard core fan base within the Academy that will be able to push that movie through. It doesn’t have enough broad support to win anything, but especially since the director’s branch chooses the directing nominees, I think he has a legitimate shot at a nomination.
I can’t wait for Bond week. I’m a HUGE Bond fan, so I will be eagerly anticipating that.

regarding Cloud Atlas:
You don’t need to watch this again. My wife and I were able to understand this the first time we saw it and we both agreed when we walked out that this is a 4/4 star film. There was applause from the audience and there are rave reviews from movie goers on imdb.com…. This is not hard to understand…. All you have to do is pay attention. Why are critics being mean regarding this movie?! I think there are commercial interests involved…….. It is easy to follow and easy to understand and beautiful and very well done!
TOM HANKS WAS AWESOME AS THE GANGSTER!!! AWESOME AS AN EVIL DOCTOR!!! AWESOME IN ALL OF HIS ROLES!!!! WOW!!! A+!!! GIVE THAT MAN AN OSCAR!!!!!! And Doona Bae!
This movie SCREAMS OSCAR!!!!!! HOW CAN YOU GUYS NOT SEE IT!!!!!!!
I predict a sweep at the Oscars – either that or they still suck because they discriminate against sci-fi.

I love the enthusiasm, but a shutout is far more likely than a sweep…
