Do you hear the people sing? Well in the new trailer for Les Misérables you can as this stirring full trailer gives us snippets of all of the cast singing the iconic songs of the musical. Though we only get brief taste of how the live singing will translate to the screen, its nice to see that the actors can actually sing (never a given in Hollywood) and that they have acquitted themselves quite nicely to the tale. Check out the heart tugging trailer and plot synopsis after the jump!
Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech‘s Academy Award-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.
In December 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs–including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”–Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.

Saw this the other week pre-Skyfall. Looks incredible on the big screen. Great to hear a selection of songs too. Feel very positive about the film as a whole now.

Why is it that Tom Hooper doesn’t understand that fish-eyed cinematography makes everything look weird and out of focus?

Well I’ve been Team Les Mis right from the time it was announced with this cast. This year, if the Oscars actually do what the audience wants to see on TV and hands out the awards to high quality films that the public actually loves (The two don’t necessarily go together sometimes never) then it will come down to Lincoln and Les Mis in almost every category where they are elegible.

Nothing more special than I expected. It’s huge and medium impressive, and can fail as well.

Biggest wild cards for me are Crowe and Redmayne, the latter of whom has the best song in the musical. I’m glad to hear they both have good voices

Wow, our first indication that this may be terrible. Amazing the difference between the first trailer and this one. My enthusiasm has suddenly decreased dramatically. Fingers crossed I’m wrong on this one, but that trailer looked sub-par in comparison, in my opinion that is.

I love it when people try to smooth over their jabs and insults against a movie they haven’t even seen by adding the disclaimer “in my opinion”. Did you really think that anybody would be taking your “opinion” as fact?

Terence, what are you smoking? Crowe sounds hideous here. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still pumped for the film, but come on man, did we watch the same trailer?

I thought he sounded fine, I was worried it’d be much worse

I liked it… It looks like a very accurate version of the musical.
I love Anne Hathaway – and I´d love to see her winning an Oscar… If she does, for this, I´ll be very happy for her… However, for the first time, I was a bit worried about her being a bit “too big, too tall” for the role… She doesn´t really look like a frail starving french woman to me. But she does sing beautifully and I hope she proves me wrong.
