The San Diego Film Critics Society has named Argo the best film of 2012. Ben Affleck won the society’s Best Director award, Chris Terrio won Best Adapted Screenplay, and William Goldenberg won Best Editing for their work on the film as well. But the group’s selection for Lead Actress was the standout pick, in my opinion. Michelle Williams won for her heartbreaking performance as a married woman who falls for another man in Take This Waltz. See what else won after the jump…

    Link(s) of the week:

The big buzz around the web this week was in response to the SAG and Golden Globe nominations. The actors that receive a nomination never seem to generate as much discussion as the actors that get left off, and the web was humming the same tune about the SAG omissions of Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams for their performances in The Master, a film that seemed almost DOA this awards season before the Golden Globes swooped in to save them.  Many around the web had the same feelings on the race at this point, but the very best came from the fact-filled SAG analysis from The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, and his factoids on the Globes impact.

    Trailergate: The Great Trailer Debate

Is the oversaturation of movie trailers changing the viewing experience?

    December 14, 2012

There’s the infamous Watergate scandal; sports followers still get a kick out of Crygate; and Antennagate  briefly plagued Apple’s release of the iPhone 4.  Well, here’s a new one for you: Trailergate.  It’s completely made-up and involves no impeachable offenses or villainous superstar athletes, so bear with me while I set this up.

DISCLAIMER: This is a (slight) dramatization… Read more on Trailergate: The Great Trailer Debate…

    vegas

In the midst of the SAG and Golden Globe news that dominated the week, we missed the announcement of the Las Vegas Film Critics Society’s awards for the year. And being that they opted for something different from the early critical favorite – Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty – we felt it would be better late than never to post the results so you can see that there was more than one great film from 2012. Have a look at what Vegas named best of the year after the jump.

    Weekend Openings: (12/14/2012)

    What's opening this weekend?

    December 14, 2012

The long-awaited (expected) journey back to Middle Earth finally sets off with the first installment of Peter Jackson’s imminent The Hobbit trilogy (still baffled as to how this turned into a hat-trick).  As Bilbo, Thorin, Gandalf and the rest of the Dwarves make their way to the Lonely Mountain, so too will the film soar to the top of the box office this weekend.  Not in the mood for second breakfast?  Skip right to lunch with a handful of other menu options…

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
    Language: English
    Rating: PG-13
    Genre: Fantasy/Adventure
    Director: Peter Jackson
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage

In his younger years, sensible Bilbo Baggins finds himself somehow convinced to venture out of the Shire to accompany a band of Dwarves on a dangerous quest to reclaim a treasure stolen by the evil dragon, Smaug.  See what Terrence had to say about this first act. On the Road (***)

This long in the works adaptation of the literary classic manages not to disappoint...

    December 14, 2012

on_the_road_ver12After what feels like just about an eternity, I finally saw ‘On the Road’ back in early October at one of the first screenings post Toronto. This is a film that’s been on the verge of release so long it’s almost become an annual joke between Clayton and myself about including it in predictions at the start of each season. Well, this is the year that we can finally talk about the adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s legendary book and where it stands in the Oscar race. The verdict on the awards front is that it’s a long shot at best in most categories. Aside from that though, this is a pretty good, if difficult, road trip drama with some notably strong acting from Garret Hedlund and Kristen Stewart especially. Sam Riley is very solid too, but those first two really shine. Walter Salles has shot an absolutely beautiful movie and along with scribe Jose Rivera has captured the words of Kerouac about as well as one could have hoped for (by using the original scroll, actually), even dating back to the days of Francis Ford Coppola seeking to adapt the seminal novel. It’s not especially Academy friendly, and hardly perfect, but it’s not something to completely cross off of your lists either. Time will tell in that regard, but this is a flick worth seeing regardless of its potential for Oscar nominations. The movie opens next week and yes, it was worth the wait, even if it took me almost two months to fully formulate a review of it…

    Sizing Up: Best Original Screenplay

The final installment in the series looks at Original Screenplays and puts a bow on Sizing Up for 2012...

    December 14, 2012

We’re at the end of the line. Of course I’m speaking of none other than the making of early groupings of the hopefuls for each major Oscar category.  This is the last one for the season, and tackles the Best Original Screenplay race. I freely admit that my success rate is still to be ultimately determined with this year’s crop of articles, but I’m feeling good about things. The precursors have now begun, so this final piece for the year has a bit more fact in its favor than those prior ones. It’s going to be a top heavy list again (like with Adapted Screenplay), but it’s still a deep one in my humble opinion. I did my best to be thorough though. I think most of you will find these rankings pretty interesting, but we shall see about that one, since this category is thought of by some to be pretty weak…or at the very least a big of a mess.
