  • Looking at Oscar’s ‘Fifth Spot’

Comparing to the 2005 season, are there fifth spots open in every category...

Denzel Washington in Robert Zemeckis’ Flight

As the Academy sent out the ballots this past Monday, Oscar Predictions were updated, and pundits attempted to wrap their heads around the state of the race. The term “lock” is being thrown around like popcorn. The Lead Actor race, especially stacked with talent, has all but one assured nomination for Daniel Day-Lewis waiting in the wings.

As I mentioned on this week’s “Power Hour”, the race in this category reminds me of the 2005 season, when nine of the world’s finest actors were battling for five spots. Don Cheadle, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, and Jamie Foxx would fill the Lead Actor lineup, with Paul Giamatti – a presumed lock in one of the Best Picture frontrunners, Sideways (2004) – being left off. Other notable omissions were Javier Bardem for The Sea Inside, Jim Carrey for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Liam Neeson for Kinsey, all worthy of citations. This season, there has been a lot of who will fill the infamous “fifth spot”, a term coined in the case of four locks in any respective group of the Academy Awards, with one spot being available to another worthy candidate.  Read more on Looking at Oscar’s ‘Fifth Spot’…

UntitledWho knew that a giant tsunami and being shipwrecked with a tiger would inspire such great music? Given that the world is supposed to be ending on Friday, now seemed like an interesting time to look at survival epics. So this entry of Spotlight on Scores will analyze two scores that made me want to quit life but gave me hope to carry on as well, The Impossible and Life of Pi. December 18, 2012

Zero_Dark_Thirty_66120-572x309On Monday I was able to conduct a couple of ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ interviews on behalf of The Awards Circuit. Today I’m bringing you my chat with editors William Goldenberg and Dylan Tichenor. Both gentlemen are Oscar nominated craftsmen who rank in the top tier of their field. Collaborating on ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, they’re each having standout years and deserve all of the accolades being thrown their way. Joey’s DVD Picks of the Week (12/18/2012)

One of the biggest groups of releases to date hits shelves and I sift through it all...

    December 18, 2012

liberal_arts_ver2This week, there’s literally about as many films coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD as I’ve ever seen in one shot to date. Luckily for all of us, it’s also a really good slate in terms of quality, besides the exceptional quantity. I have a half dozen movies that I’m recommending, and two flicks fighting it out for top honors today. There’s something for everyone, and that’s always a plus for the column. The film that’s my PICK OF THE WEEK is an incredibly underrated little movie, but still an exceptional one. It’s also a movie strongly in contention for my year end Top 10 list. The flick I’m so high on? Well, it’s: Read more on Joey’s DVD Picks of the Week (12/18/2012)…

    Who will win?

The end is near, my brain is about to explode and my tears might flow freely once more as another undeserving winner of The Voice is about to be crowned. But wait — there is a catch, and a bright light at the end of the often dark tunnel I travel on! Thanks to iTunes playing a major factor in determining who stays and goes each week — and who, ultimately, wins the competition — Cassadee Pope, easily the most deserving and musically relevant of the final three, might walk away the victor tonight with slam-dunk ease thanks to her dominance on the iTunes charts. Yep, whoever receives the majority of downloads has their overall votes multiplied by ten, which in Cassadee’s case means she has the victory in the bag. I know I’ve done my fair share of ragging — some might say “trolling” — on Terry McDermott and Nicholas David throughout the entire season, but I applaud them for making it as far as they did. And you know what? As cliché as this sounds, they got here fair and square, and not for lack of trying so congratulations to them. Below, you will find my last review session of the season. May the best men lose and remaining woman win (couldn’t resist!)… Read more on ‘The Voice’ Recap: The Finals…
